We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeanishma Daniels. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeanishma below.
Jeanishma, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
They have always supported me on my career path and entrepreneurial journey. I have to expand this question beyond my parents for a moment. Since I was 4, I’ve been surrounded by many entrepreneurs in my family. My grandmother owned her own cleaning company where she cleaned houses, company buildings, and our church at the time. I would go with her to clean the houses. She’d pay me for going with her. My great aunt owns a fashion boutique and she’s also a seamstress in our hometown of Macon, Georgia. She has been in business since 1993. When I was a teenager, my mom started decorating flower arrangements, that included bouquets for weddings and also making Christmas wreaths during the holiday seasons. My mom also told me how my grandmother supported her early on as a child as well. My grandmother allowed her to own her own candy store in their apartment when my mom was 6 years old. Having the representation constantly around me was motivating to be an entrepreneur one day as well

Jeanishma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a chef. I’ve been a chef for 18 years. My industry is culinary arts. I can do both, cook and bake. The problem I solve for my clients/customers is to bring fresh ingredients into their world and take the load off for them. When I am cooking or baking for them, it’s done from the place of making sure they come back. The flavors are undeniably delicious! The one thing that I am proud of is never giving up. There are times when business is extremely slow, you don’t throw in the towel. Utilize the slow moments to do something to enhance your business in some way. YouTube and Google are still free tools to help you. It could be for marketing, trying a new technique, or as simple as making new business cards. Use your free time wisely.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Word of mouth really helped initiate my reputation. Depending on which social media platform you use, the algorithm may or may not push your content when you’re first starting out. However, having people in your local community that believe in you and support you can take you to higher heights until you can soar and fly on your own with your business.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Unlearn looking at what other people do and also, don’t compare them to you even if you do the same thing as they do. This take may get a few eye rolls. I don’t believe in paying attention to the next person and what they’re doing. Comparison can be a mood and confidence killer. If you’re a person who can look someone’s content or product within your field and use it as motivation, by all means, do what motivates you. But if you’re a person who can’t handle that and start to get defeated because someone appears to be doing better than you, stay in your lane. In the past, I would compare to others and think that I was failing. I wasn’t in any way. I’d see the people I was comparing myself to in public and they’d tell me how me being in business is motivating them. It’s all a big circle. A friend of mine told me a gem one day. She said we have multiple burger restaurants open worldwide and they’re all making millions.
