We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeanine Finch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeanine below.
Jeanine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
As a Branding, Wedding, and Family photographer my business legacy is to carry on your Family’s legacy for generations to come. Whether it’s through growing your business with branding photos and passing on generational wealth or through capturing precious family milestones during a weddings and family sessions, my hope is that my clients will treasure the moments I capture and the photos will tell their wonderful, truly unique stories. I work closely with my clients to make sure that we focus on the moments that matter most to them.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I can’t remember not being obsessed with photos. As a child I would sit and look at our family photographs and albums as a pass time and I would go through disposable cameras (hello 90’s kids!) as fast as I could! In college I got my first exposure to professional photography with a company that specialized in sports action photography, I was hooked! Digital Photography was taking over and I loved the instant gratification of seeing my vision right on the back of the camera and not having to wait for my film to be developed or to do it myself. I was with the sports action company for about 3 years before I decided to go to a photography school and start my own photography business. I started with a WordPress site and offered family photo sessions. Slowly I grew overtime and expanded to weddings and most recently added Business Branding. I love working with my clients to understanding their goals for each session and bringing my creativity to achieve them. The majority of my clients I have been fortunate enough to work with in many different areas of their lives from starting a family to growing their businesses, it’s so wonderful to build the relationship and trust over years.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
For me I have grown my clientele with a strong word of mouth from my loyal customers and by making sure everyone I meet know’s I am a Photographer. If you don’t tell people, how will they know! I keep up with what’s happening in my clients lives and keep notes about things that we connected on so I can remember details for our next sessions. I also work really hard to remember the names of everyone in their family, even their dogs or other animals. One of my repeat clients has a very energetic dog so I set a reminder to bring treats with me and last year even had someone come help me with the dog so that we could get photos with and without her. It made a huge difference for the session and photos came out great! Underpromising and overdelivering so my clients feel excited and surprised about little touches I add in along the way is also so helpful in having a great customer experience.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As a creative and a small business owner, money has always been a huge hurdle for me. It was so hard in the beginning to charge my friends or family for my time and talent. There’s so much that goes into being a photographer that isn’t behind the camera or one on one with a client and it took me a long time to get out of my comfort zone and be competitive with my prices and the value I had to offer. I think as a creative the faster you can get comfortable with charging what you are worth the better you will be able to free up your mind to keep enhancing your skills!
