Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jeanette Velasco Shane . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jeanette, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you manage your own social media?
I manage my own social media. When you’re growing a business based on something you enjoy doing, which for me happens to be social media it’s something in this moment I am not ready to pass off. I enjoy content creation coming up with ideas and bringing them to life eventually maybe having people take over editing and posting maybe. I love having the creative control and freedom of creating my own content. I’ve done it for companies/ people in my career It got me thinking I’m helping people grow their presence I should do it for myself as well and share something I love. I’ve been blessed to have found success in that and a community who supports what I put out! My advice would be focus on what you do well and hire out what you can’t do well and will help propel your business. Right down everything you would like to see in your business and then pick 3 things you would like to see happen a year from now. Break those ups in to smaller steps. Do you know how to do all of those on your own or will you need help? If you need help dedicate time for that. Start simple 5 hours to help propel your business can help a ton once you get to a point where you don’t know how else to push. 5 hours a month hire out what you need to help push your business forward. Some things might need more than that. Set out a budget for what you can allocate for that. A friend you trust, someone in the industry you are in. If you’re not good or care for social media hiring someone who does and you admire their style of work can help collaborate with them on ideas you would like to see them create content for. If you are good at social media but struggle with posting your videos consistently hire someone who can help with that, if you need help with a website hire someone to help with that, hire an accountant if you are making revenue off social media make sure you are set up correctly so you don’t run into issues later on. Do things right at the beginning so it makes the process seamless as you continue. It’s okay to ask for help and focus on the things you are good at saves you time and allows you to work on things you are doing well.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a freelance marketing manager and founder and content creator behind Juicy Juicing J. I create simple engaging content around health and wellness specifically around juicing, juicing recipes, produce, etc. I have a degree in Marketing and have been in the grocery and beverage industry for about 7 years including my own Juicy Juicing J. I love health and wellness and believe it doesn’t have to be complicated it can start simply with getting more fruits and veggies in your day to day. Many people don’t get fruits or veggies in and juicing is a simple way to start. I think there is so much messaging around health and wellness out there and it can be overwhelming for some people especially when they are starting out. Small Simple steps can lead to big changes. I hope my content is a gateway to their health and wellness journey and they feel it is a safe space to ask questions and see how simple it can be whether they choose to eat juice or blend their fruits and veggies As long as they are getting them in to their day to day that’s the win for me!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’m first generation. Although no one has ever asked me to or expected me to I always wanted to prove that I can do things on my own. That I have to do everything by myself to be successful. I learned these past years it’s not sustainable and started to see it affect my physical and mental health. It It’s okay to ask for help and have people around you to help with things I’m not good at. It’s okay to take a step back and reevaluate yours goals and change them. It’s okay to not spread myself thin. If I want to do well in all aspects of my life I have to make sure I’m taking care of myself. You build more and can do more with the right help. Blessed to have an incredible support system that checks on me and makes sure I’m okay.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
As a creative make sure you get a good accountant. Talking to other creatives I’ve seen this be an issue and they get suprised at the end of the year with taxes etc. I wish I would have set ourselves up sooner with an account then we did. Especially if you are beginning to make revenue off your services. Doing things right from the beginning and having someone help guide you and give you advice will make all the difference as you grow and make sure that you are operating as you should being a business.
