We recently connected with Jeanette Ninyo and have shared our conversation below.
Jeanette , appreciate you joining us today. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
Prior to entering into the field of yoga full-time, I was an environmental geologist by day and yoga teacher at night. One of the owners of a studio I taught at pulled me aside one day and asked if I had ever considered managing my very own yoga studio! Truth be told, I had never considered it but his inquiry sparked something in me – a glimmer of what my life might look like if I took a leap and went all in on this “yoga thing.”
Needless to day, I took the leap. It was my boss’s vision that kick started my belief that my life could shift into a new industry and lifestyle. He was kind and firm and I ALWAYS knew where I stood with him. He had a way to highlight my strengths that made me always reach for more. He was present AND gave me freedom to make the studio come alive. I am grateful everyday for the communities I have built in the yoga and wellness industries since that time.
Jeanette , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
How I got here was both unexpected and perfect.
Prior to working full time in the yoga landscape, I was a glaciologist, environmental geologist, and yoga teacher in the evening. I shared how I went from geology to full time yoga management and teaching but like all things – it all worked out just as it should.
I am a passionate community builder and lover of people and conscious movement. I have had the distinct pleasure of managing the YogaSix in 4S Ranch since 2013. I love the people, the yoga, and the whole VIBE.
On a personal level, I am a health, wellness, yoga, running enthusiast AND a mother to two young girls.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In one word – Covid.
Covid was a gamechanger in pretty much every industry and this was no different.
We were perpetually pivoting to comply with new information/directives. We navigated virtual, outdoor, and a variety of other structures to keep yoga available to our members.
I can say yoga was a practice I was SO grateful for during that season and beyond.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
This is hard to say. In many ways, yoga and the yogic lifestyle seemed to choose me and has shaped who I am as an individual and shifted the trajectory of my life. It is wild to consider a time when yoga was not a big part of my world.
I met my husband through yoga initially. I made lifelong friends that I am forever grateful for.
Instead of looking back and thinking – what if It was different – I am grateful it is as it is.
