We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeanette Jackson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeanette below.
Alright, Jeanette thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
To be honest, most of my opportunities fell into my lap. For starters I’ve been around and playing basketball since I was 4 years old. My passion for the game started early on while watching my big brother play. He would take me out and show me the ropes on the court. By the time I was 4 years old, I was on my first basketball team and the best player on the floor. My support system always made sure I stayed out of trouble and in the gym. In Lancaster California I went on to being ranked 10th in the nation before moving to Las Vegas. None the less, the task at hand continued. I earned a scholarship to many schools but I chose THE PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY. Where I went on to lead my team to 3 consecutive swac championships and 3 NCAA appearances, in a row. I went on to receive MVP, Player of the Year, First team all conference, plus many many more. My favorite accomplishment is the fact that I am the all time leading scorer in school history for both men and women’s basketball. Such a cool thing to say, not too many people can say that. Following that, I received three contracts to play ball overseas, twice in Spain and once in Romanian before retiring and pursuing coaching. I coached and went to graduate school at PVAMU, where I graduated with my masters in physical education and a bachelor’s in Business management.
I’ve always been in the spotlight for as long as I could remember and I’ve always loved it. I constantly put in work, networked, & presented myself well. Growing up I’d boast about my looks and slim yet fit body and sense of fashion. But it wasn’t until I went to college that people started noticing my style. My friends & family would always tell me to start posting pictures of my outfits and they’d even ask me to style them. Once I get a vision and/or bring their vision to life, that feeling of happiness consumed me. From then on, I created Clear.Vzn.Stylez which is my styling business. I went from styling to modeling the looks that consumed my brain. I began bringing those looks to life with my swag and personality. I began getting gear and modeling it for different local Houston brands. Which is how I began creating and modeling. Fashion designers, simply liked my work and style and put their faith in me to bring their products to life. People started showing more love that way and that’s how I got into modeling and content creating. That life pretty much took off out of nowhere. An old friend of mine constantly showed love on my IG pics. He loved my style and he just so happened to be a fashion designer. His brand is known as Top Shelf 7Teen and it’s fire. He ended up reaching out to me and asking me to be apart of his team in New York for Fashion Week, the rest is history, as we plan to pop out in many more shows. Modeling is my natural habitat, I love it.
As far as my AAU program. I work under my old team mate Chelsey Rosier. She’s the director of the program and I work very closely with her. She brung me on board a couple of years back, as we started with one team. Now Texas Southern Flames, better known as TSF is one of the top power house AAU programs in Houston, Texas. We currently have four women basketball teams under our program. So cool to say that I’m able to help kids reach their potential and send them on to college to better their life with my teammates/friends/ and better yet, my family.
Jeanette, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jeanette Jackson and I go by JeaJea “JJ”. I am a basketball coach, model, stylist, creator, and I work in the mental health field with kids that have been diagnosed with different types of severe mental disorders. Such as schizophrenic, bipolar, ADHD/ADD, suicidal, animalistic, you name it. My mom provided me with a loving home which she taught me patience and showed me how to care and love for others. I truly believe that I was put here on earth to help heal, lead, love and nurture those in need. I’m most proud of that and also of how people view me. I love the positive reputation that I have and I love the fact that I have so much more to give.
At the age of 4 I was taught disciple, time management, and hard work. I was taught to put my all into everything that I do. Growing up with a single mom, it was hard at times to afford extra things. So I worked for mine. I had to hustle for everything. My mom told me that she knew I was going to be special because I knew how to make a way out of no way. I was always saling candy, yes I was the candy girl back in the day. I had also started my own neighborhood basketball league. I bought everyone shirts and made these jerseys by writing in sharpie the team name, their number, and last name with a little design. Each block on the neighborhood had their own design and color. Those were the good ol days. Of course I busted their butts 😂. Nonetheless, I was just blessed enough with this mamba mentality. I’ve always been a leader, each team I participated on, I was captain even as a freshman in college. It’s safe to say that my work ethic and personality/ character is my favorite part of life and I take pride in it. I don’t plan on letting up any time soon and I want to continue my legacy.
As far as my style, it’s my moms fault 🤪😂. My mom stay fly, she always had my siblings & I fly and well groomed. Every picture I look back at, I have on fly kicks and outfits. With some fresh braids. My mom tells me all the time that I get my style from her. If it wasn’t for that strong woman that also happens to be my hero, I probably wouldn’t have the sense of fashion that I have today. I’m also blessed to have my mom, because she supports my rage of versatility when it comes to my style, without judgement. Which allows me to create, model, and style freely. It’s always a blessing to have such an amazing support system, truly.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, I just want people to be comfortable in their own skin. Those little girls around the world that don’t understand their style and why they are the way that they are, I just want to be able to provide a safety net. Let them know that it’s ok to be yourself. You can be different with your styles whether it’s girly one day and a tomboy another day. Own it and be comfortable in your skin. Everyone is dope in their own special way and I hope to one help people realize that. Again, I’m all for helping people reach their full potential anyway that I can. My mission is to help people reach their fullest potential in their life within my services, influence, style, work, and creativity.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson that I’ve had to learn is to stop allowing people to use me. My Bestfriend would always tell me that I am too nice. That was one thing she disliked. The fact that I’d sometimes let people take advantage of me, unintentionally of course. Which I did. Sometimes I’d find myself giving free services and helping out. But when it would come to me needing that help and support in return, sometimes people were nowhere to be found. Don’t get me wrong, I have a solid support system and they know who they are! I love you guys to death. But I had to learn how to say no. Or I’d figure out a way to help others in a way that would also help me, so that it wouldn’t be a negative outcome/lesson. I’m a natural born giver, in which I had to learn how to be a taker as well. Simply putting myself, my brand, and my business, first was the biggest lesson and blessing that I had to learn.
