We recently connected with Jeanelle Ditto and have shared our conversation below.
Jeanelle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I think the biggest challenge to this industry and lots of industries is matching the customer expectation with what they want versus their budget. Most people, generally have an idea of what they like but aren’t familiar with what their vision may cost. We always want that pinnacle product and end result but try to find ways to stay below pinnacle pricing. This sometimes can create a lack luster or underwhelming experience for the customer because maybe they didn’t have the budget to support what they envisioned. Because I’m such a giver, I usually take the hit first to make sure the customer gets as close to pinnacle end result as possible.
Additionally, sometimes this is an emotional process and the customer changes their mind. When they change their mind, the work takes longer or we have to redo things, this also eats into budgets worse than it should.
As an extensive planner myself, I would rather over plan and prepare then do things twice.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Raised in a small town in Tennessee, I darted for the California life the minute I graduated high school. I always felt like a creative soul but found myself climbing the corporate ladder. When I reached a turning point in my life, I went back to school to study design. I opened Blush Interior Designs shortly after graduating from design school.
Your space can enhance your mood and the way you react to things. As a designer I want my clients to feel confident and in sync with their finished spaces. I have a specific eye for the modern, sleek and bold. I love incorporating touches that are unexpected and edgy. I love to bring in a pop of glamour to draw the eye while keeping the rest of the room balanced and cohesive. Always incorporating that wow factor!
Blush Interiors Design clients are people who have an appetite for something out of the ordinary.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
If you want to succeed you have to be able to get kicked down 100 times and continue to get up and keep doing and being you. My life and my journey has had many ups and down as many of the readers out there have also experienced. I have made countless mistakes with Blush. I opened a retail boutique and 1 week later Covid-19 started. I lost my store and all the assets in it. It was a huge eye opener to me that you never know what is going to pop its ugly head around the corner. It is how we react to thing that is so crucial in life. I have learned a lot from listening to some remarkable power players and hearing their stories and journeys. It is all about how you choose to react that can lead you to success or failure.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One of my clients that I have designed for in the past, Kyle Mallien, is a serial business entrepreneur. He has a book called “Create Unlimited Customers”. Throughout our time together, I saw peaks of what he did for his career. I heard and listened to stories of what he had gone through on his journey to success. I felt like I could really connect as we had similar pasts. I felt like he was a lot like me and that if he could do it, why couldn’t I? I read his book and he invited me to attend some of his teaching events. I met a lot of other entrepreneurs just like me. It was such a relief to not feel so lost and alone. Since I have been working with him, I have made small changes here and there and have been able to triple my income. Sometimes we’re so head down in our businesses it’s tough to be objective. I have found, not only is it mandatory to be hungry and ready to work and try new things, but having the right strategy can make all the difference. This has all been done before. You can be as big and successful as you like as the perception of growth is all in your mind. But get a good coach and one thats been their before, and it can make all the difference in your journey. Entrepreneurship is lonely.
