Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jean Walker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jean , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
Beach Genie is truly a family business. We work together for all of our events, having our teenage sons involved throughout the process. The boys do events regularly, being responsible for packing equipment, setting up, clean up and greeting guests. They are responsible for maintaining equipment and reporting when equipment needs extra cleaning or maintenance. Our one son takes a graphic design class at school and has created our flyers for hotels and vacation rental homes. We do weekly scheduling meetings with the boys so they understand what their responsibilities will be for the week.
The business has taught our sons how to handle responsibility, logistics, and the value of punctuality.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Beach Genie is a luxury beach experience company. We do luxury beach set ups, cabana parties and luxury bonfire services. We got into this business to make beach days easier for families and provide a beautiful opportunity for people to spend time together on the sand.
We provide everything needed for a fabulous beach day, enabling locals and visitors to arrive at the beach with nothing and have a fantastic beach day. When the client’s are done, they just leave the beach and we take care of breaking down the equipment, cleaning and storing everything for the next use.
What sets us apart from others is our commitment to only working on beaches where we are legally permitted. Many companies started up during Covid and just set up anywhere on the beach, without permits, insurance or legal authorization. Many of those businesses are no longer operating because of these issues. Because we only operate on beaches where we are legally allowed, we have been able to partner with hotels, resorts, destination management companies and provide large, corporate events. That trust with our clients is well earned.
Additionally, we are committed to utilizing equipment that is high quality and made in the USA. Our chairs and side tables are made in North Carolina from oak trees sustainably sourced in the area. Our umbrellas are manufactured in New Jersey. Our coolers are made in California. Even our paddle ball sets are created in Florida. Our high quality equipment is built to withstand hundreds of uses, ensuring that your beach day is not only luxurious, it also eliminates the issues with visitors purchasing low quality equipment that gets thrown away at the end of a vacation.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When we first started our business, we had a difficult time finding beaches that would allow permitting for our business. We began reaching out to State representatives and local City Councilmembers for support and were successful. Currently, Beach Genie operates legally on more beaches in San Diego county than any other professional beach service provider.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Our reputation is really built on trust. People trust us with their anniversaries, birthdays and marriage proposals. They need to feel comfortable that not only will we deliver on their special day, but that all the details will be covered.
