We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jean-Pierre LaPolice. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jean-Pierre below.
Hi Jean-Pierre, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
I worked in tanning salons most of my teenage years and that was what really opened my mind up to the concept of “skincare”. Working in that industry taught me about ingredients in lotions that were good for your skin etc. So in Spring 2022 I decided to go to Paul Mitchell for Esthetics and fell in love on the first day! After graduating I was offered a position for Esthetics at Harlow Salon + Spa in Johns Island, SC. I was nervous in the beginning being fresh out of school and jumping right into my career, but once everything was set into place I felt at home. At Harlow I have had the opportunity to basically build the Esthetics from scratch and customize it to how I wanted it to be. Which gave me a lot of freedom but also a lot on my plate. But since I was doing something I loved, everything just came naturally. My main goal in this beauty industry is to make people feel comfortable in their own skin. Natural beauty is key and I LOVE being able to help my clients achieve that. I am very grateful for the opportunity and freedom that the owner of Harlow has given me because it has made me be able to grow and learn while also having the support of my co-workers and boss.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
HI! My name is Jean-Pierre LaPolice, but I go by JP. I’m 26 and I moved to Charleston, SC in 2020 from Charlotte, NC. I graduated from Paul Mitchell Esthetics program in the summer of 2022 and jumped right into my Esthetics career at Harlow Salon + Spa. My main focus is achieving skincare goals with my clients and making everyone feel confident in their own skin. I focus on facial treatments, waxing, brow lamination and lash lift/tints. In my facial treatments I have many options to choose from including Red Light Therapy and High-Frequency which are just a couple of extra modalities that can help to achieve someones skin goals. The product line I use is IMAGE and I love this brand just for the flexibility of their products and having so many different options for all skin types. I think being a male in the beauty industry really sets me apart from the rest. Some people don’t agree with it, but others rave for it and no matter how someone feels my work is consistent and I am proud of what I do. There’s no better feeling than your client reaching out to you telling you how good their skin feels or how amazing their brows/lashes look and thats what keeps me going. I wouldn’t have been able to make it without the support of my clients, family & friends supporting me through school and day to day.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing your clientele is getting yourself out there! I struggled in the beginning with having the confidence to walk up to people and hand them a business card or ask if they’ve ever had a facial treatment done. But if you don’t market yourself, nobody will ever know. Having business cards and posting on social media play a big part in growing your clientele. We also do events at local spots in our area which lets the locals know you exist and that helps a lot considering the majority of your client base is in close proximity to your business. Basically don’t be afraid to approach people and market yourself! The more confidence you have in yourself the more inclined people will be to want your services!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The biggest thing that has built my reputation is people and socializing. Friends, family & clients supporting me and telling their friends and family about me and what I do brings in more business than social media marketing. If you do a good job and you provide exceptional service, people are going to want to share their experiences with others.
