Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jean-Paul Flerin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jean-Paul, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
Yes, my work is often misunderstood and usually characterized as something stereotypical or run of the mill. The main purpose of my persona / image is to inspire others. Whether it be the make up look, the styling, or detailing within certain parts of a look, everyone should be able to pull some type of inspiration from the given “look”. When we look at others we’re always very quick to view the artist as boy, or girl, their sexuality or certain lifestyle and I’d like to rip apart those stigmas when viewing my art. When someone view’s Jean-Paul they should only be focused on the image portrayed, the colors, complimenting details, and possible metaphors in the background. I understand everyone will receive the message differently, however all art derives from inspiration, and if I can help guide others into creating their own version of art, then the message has been successfully delivered. Most of my artwork is ahead of its time, and definitely displays numerous of subtle head nods to all my inspirations.

Jean-Paul, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jean-Paul, an independent artist from NYC. I typically travel between NYC and ATL often to work on new music, visuals, or fashion. I decided to enter into the music industry as a savior for pop culture. As of recent pop music has lost it’s unique value and touch, and music has been blended in with other genres or gimmicks. I knew that in today’s age we need a modern day Renaissance, and it will derive from an experimental pop sound. I have my debut album on iTunes, / all streaming platforms with a free digital booklet. I also am working on a new fashion line to sell to my fans and friends that support me as an artist and as a brand… JeanPaulxo. The more everyone supports and dive deeper into the art, the better of a chance I have of building / fostering a new community that is comprised of people who identify as themselves with no other stigma or stereotypical label. I’m proud to have come out with a debut album with a fabulous music video to capture the essence of what more I could possible do with a true Label Backing. It’s only a matter of time until we all become apart of the XO Club.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
A lot of support for artist come in different ways, however true support should go deeper than normal streaming / viewing. Purchasing albums help an artist tremendously, and shows the artist true support, the album can always be played at anytime. Other artist might have merchandise, set aside for those that might need or want apparel, or home goods which is actually a super cool thing! Constant feedback and collaborative ideas should definitely happen so the artist can stay potent in their craft. Society has to find ways to allow an artist to be the best that they can be, on and off social media.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being able to conduct a 20K Music Video all on my own, with an amazing talented team, while working full time was a true accomplishment, and showcased how resilient my drive is, regardless of any shortcomings. The ability to pull all different talented people into one project for us all to showcase our skills was truly an experience, and should be celebrated from all parties. Even before the video came out, I was able to put together a private movie theatre viewing at IPIC theaters for those closest to me to view before the big release! It almost seems like the endeavors are all too vigorous to complete, but keeping a steady mindset will set one self up for success.
