We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jean Baik a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jean, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I manage my own team in house. We have our own designers, content creators. We make all the content (photos and videos) and post to our social channels. We have worked with companies before but found that managing in house is so much better!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I founded shopmissa.com in 2013 with my husband Kenneth. We wanted to create a beauty space where everything is $1 so that customers could experience and “just have fun” with makeup without breaking the bank! I also wanted to break the industry standard markup and wanted to provide amazing quality products at the most affordable price. Miss A has thousands of products from makeup to jewelry to hair accessories to lifestyle goods. We were on Inc 5000’s fastest growing companies, have been awarded Allure’s Best of Beauty awards, and have 20 brick and mortar locations throughout Texas.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When we started the business in 2013, Youtube beauty content creators were growing extremely quickly. Everyone interested in makeup and beauty was on youtube watching videos for hours and hours. We started by seeding Miss A products to beauty influencers to review our products and that kick started our audience on social media and experienced tremendous growth!
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
Yes we manufacture our own line of cosmetics, skincare and lifestyle/home decor goods. Most of our manufacturing takes place in Asia. My husband knew about manufacturing from his previous business, and so we decided to start off with cosmetics. We started attending trade shows all over the world to meet and connect with factories. We first start of with sampling to make sure the quality of products are up to our standards, and then go into full product development process once we see that the factory is a good fit for our line of products. Today, we work with over 100 different manufacturers.
