We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jean & Alex. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jean & Alex below.
Hi Jean & Alex, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Our parents were instrumental in shaping our musical journey. Both were deeply involved in the music at church, with our father taking it further by recording two Christian albums. When he discovered our musical talent, he decided to form a trio with us, and we recorded our first album together as kids.
From an early age, we performed in church as a trio with our dad. Recognizing our potential, he found vocal coaches to help us grow. One of our first vocal coaches in Puerto Rico introduced us to gospel and R&B, teaching us techniques inspired by vocal groups like Boyz II Men and Take 6. At the time, we were just 6 and 8 years old.
Our parents were committed to nurturing our musical growth. They made sure we attended vocal lessons every Saturday, and were always involved in church performances. When we reached middle school age, they supported us in auditioning for “Ernesto Ramos Antonini ‘Libre de Música’,” a renowned music school in Puerto Rico. There, we studied classical music theory, played in orchestras, and took part in choirs and other musical groups.
Even outside of school, our parents ensured we continued with private lessons to further refine our skills. Their dedication and support were crucial to our development, and without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are Jean & Alex, two brothers from Bayamón, Puerto Rico, who grew up with music as a central part of our lives. Early on, we were immersed in a musical environment, performing and recording alongside our father, who was also a Christian artist. This foundation allowed us to nurture our own sound, blending R&B, Latin, and urban influences to create something unique.
What really sets us apart is the fact that we handle every element of our music ourselves. From writing the lyrics to producing the tracks, everything you hear is fully crafted by us. It’s more than just music for us—it’s a personal expression of who we are, and we’re proud to say that we’re pioneering a space for authentic R&B within the Spanish-speaking community.
One of our proudest achievements was recording a duet with Jennifer Hudson for the Adam Sandler movie Sandy Wexler on Netflix, a song produced by the legendary Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. It was a huge honor to work with such incredible talent, and moments like that remind us how far we’ve come.
As independent artists, we face our fair share of challenges, but having full creative control over our work has allowed us to maintain authenticity. We aim to create music that not only entertains but also inspires and connects with listeners. We want our fans to feel the passion we put into every note and lyric, and our goal is to bridge cultural gaps through the universal language of music.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding moments for us as artists came during our first tour, which started in Italy. We performed two concerts in Milano and also in Rome, and to our surprise, the audience’s appreciation was beyond anything we expected. It was amazing to witness how our music, though sung in Spanish, transcended language barriers. People from different cultures were singing along with us, connecting to the emotions and energy of the songs. The feeling of creating something that resonates deeply with others—despite differences in language or background—has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of our journey.
This tour, which also includes stops in Los Angeles and Montreal, showed us how far-reaching music can be, especially as we bring a unique mix of R&B and Bachata to audiences in ways that haven’t been done before. Being independent artists comes with many challenges—we create all our own music, videos, and have had to learn the business side on our own—but seeing how our work can touch people and make a positive impact makes it all worthwhile. That connection with fans, where we all come together for the love of music, is what truly keeps us going.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Our journey as independent artists has been full of challenges, and one of the biggest tests of our resilience came as we prepared for our first international tour. We had been dreaming of performing live for a long time, but the road to getting there was anything but easy. As independent artists, we wear many hats; we not only create the music but also handle production, marketing, and the business side of things.
There were moments when it felt overwhelming, and without the backing of a major label, we had to rely on our resourcefulness. It took years of learning the ins and outs of the industry, figuring out contracts, bookings, and making our art profitable. Despite these obstacles, we stayed focused on our mission.
When we finally hit the stage, witnessing the audience’s reaction was a pivotal moment for us. Seeing people connect with our music, singing along, and feeling the emotion behind our songs made all the hard work worth it. That experience taught us that resilience isn’t just about pushing through tough times but also about adapting, learning, and staying committed to our vision. Without resilience, we wouldn’t have been able to share our unique blend of R&B and Bachata with audiences around the world.
