We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Je-Wan Herbert a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Je-Wan , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Ever since I was a child I have always had a passion for creating. I have a variety of family members who also create. As that passion continued to grow I began seeking more knowledge in this area. went to art school. Then continued my journey on my own finding knowledge from wherever I could. When it comes to the craft of creating art, practice makes perfect.
Je-Wan , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Je-Wan Herbert. I also go by ( J1 ). I am a surreal neon blacklight artist who loves working with vibrant colors. I have always had a passion for art, however, I always wanted to do it on a big level. Within the past few years I have been blessed to sell works of art, participate in local art shows, as well as create beautiful murals for my city. I got into digital work and begin creating logos for small businesses. This journey has not been an easy one but one that has continued to teach me new ways to be creative. I do my best to stick to my regular routines of sketching everyday to stay in the groove when I am busy. Being a creative is not always easy. In my experience, I have learned to pace myself with my creative process. In order for me to create I have to be in the right mindset. My overall goal with this journey is to bless people with beautiful works of art that inspire. as well as meeting likeminded people who can teach me more skills along the way.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe that the key to helping more artists is to give them more opportunities to showcase their works, as well as giving artist bigger platforms where their work would normally never be shown. It is true that the higher end art world is closed off to most of the general public. It is also true that most businesses that deal in art are focused on other ventures besides the obvious. If the world is going to evolve creatively we must open the doors to artists in order to reach better heights.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing the reactions of peoples faces when they see my work. I love watching their eyes light up as they get filled with a sense of euphoria
