We recently connected with JC Jones and have shared our conversation below.
JC, appreciate you joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
I moved to Los Angeles, CA in 2009 in pursuit of my creative dreams — I was so naive! A year to the date I was diagnosed with HIV. Already being insecure about my sexuality, this added unexpected layer produces shame, low self-worth, bad relationships and a plethora of other things that tried to derail me from my creative destiny.
JC, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a singer, I produce, write and record my own music I coin, “SOUL POP.” A soulful blend of vulnerable and heartfelt lyrics with uptempo dance/pop beats. I just recently released a new single and video, “Out of My Mind,” featuring Bell Biv Devoe which is available on all streaming and music platforms. All proceeds from the single go towards my non-profit, The FreeLux Project, a DFW based 501c3 that provides FREE STI testing, healthcare navigation and stigma reduction.
My love for fashion started when I was a little boy watching my grandmothers and mother dress for church. This love was later cultivated into a love for overall creative direction when I started high school and met my substitute teacher, Tiffany Walker who you may know as, Pink Lucy! I worked to help her build her brand and got first hand experience on what it takes to be successful. My 15 years in Los Angeles prepared for for what I’m doing today. Luxury, sophistication and a regal mindset were inbreed in me through my best friend and mentor, Adrienne Maloof, and I carry that mindset to all of the clients and I work with in photography and creative direction.
After 15+ years in entertainment, I have become the “influencer’s influencer” as I am highly sought after by brands, public figures, influencers and celebrities when in need of a “new look!”
In 2020 I opened my online store, House of Jones (www.houseofjonesco.com), where I sell a personally curated collection of men and women’s clothing and accessories.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My ultimate goal and mission is to let others know they are not alone. So many things have come to distract me from my destiny/goals, making me feel isolated and/or lonely. Everything I do aims to uplift and encourage.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect has to be the feeling I get when someone genuinely feels seen and/or heard. I feel closer to God and my purpose when this happens because God is the ultimate creator. The ability to tap into this whether its on set creative directing/photographing on a shoot or on stage drives me to move and operate in the best self that I possibly can.
