Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jc Gardner. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi JC, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I am a self-employed, part-time entrepreneur. My mission is to help new and seasoned clients become published authors through the power of the pen. I’m not a publisher, but I’m a writing coach and ghostwriter. I get immense joy helping people bring their literary projects to fruition. Everyone has a story to be told. In my industry, we like to say your story is not only for you, but it’s to bless and free someone else. I also do various writing workshops, editing, and provide support to anthology projects, just to name a few. I also enjoy speaking and inspiring and encouraging others.
I’m still working a day job as well, but I’m passionate about writing and coaching.
JC, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Years ago I was scarred by my 7th grade English teacher. After she assigned the class a creative writing project, I was super happy to hand in my original book of poems. When the assignment was returned, she embarassed me in front of the class saying it was all plagiarized and I would receive a zero for the assignment. Her words were venemous and hurtful. Back then, I was shy and introverted, but I already knew my path was to be a writer; however, in that moment, she extinquished my light.
I lived her truth about me for many decades and squandered my writing talent. Some people are perennials and easily bounce back with a tough resolve to prove to themselves and others who they are desitnaed to be.
Then there’s me and many others who are not quite there yet. At that time in my young life, I was still on the journey of who I was and had not yet owned my God-given gifts and talents and purpose. For many of us, when we are about to have that all -important breakthrough, an avalanche of negativity can come along and bury all hopes, wishes and dreams.
It took me decades of walking in the wilderness to emerge out of that teacher’s shadows to own and embrace what I had surpressed deep down — my love of the written word and excelling at storytelling. After a divine intervention and breakthorugh moment, I moved into my purpose. I had to pay it forward and that’s why I now help and nurture authors every step of the way.
I want to say this too. I’ve had many people, loved ones included, say, “That was so long ago. You should be healed from that; it wasn’t so bad. How come you’re not over it?”
Ahhh, if only it was that easy to erase all hurt, pain, insults, verbal daggers, and dream-crusher moments! The tongue cuts like a double-edged sword leaving gaping holes, slashes and unclosed wounds because in that moment of time, you believe what is being said to you and you end up carrying that within your spirit. It takes root like sticky weeds and thorns choking the life out of you from the inside out. That’s why it’s so important that we watch what we say to our youth and quite frankly, to each other as adults as well.
In my case, I could not stop writing. It’s part of my DNA. Today, I’m an award-winning author. I also coach and mentor youth with a local Baltimore nonprofit on writing their first book.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My best source of new clients has been my free writing workshops and word of mouth. I have many repeat clients that return to me to help them with their ongoing writing projects.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to address this question from a different angle. I have worked with many clients who say they can’t write, they aren’t good in English, that creativity is not their thing. More often than not, that is NOT the case. There are many approaches to writing and sharing your story that probably have not been fully explored or, like me, you were told an untruth about your abilities. I have seen some remarkable achievements from those who came to me with that mindset and in the end, they produced amazing literary works! That’s what coaching is all about. And the other service I offer is as a ghostwriter. A ghostwriter writes the book in the client’s style and using the client’s voice. Then the client owns the final product and markets it as their own. So there’s no reason not to share your story. And let’s be clear. Your “story” doesn’t have to be personal. You may have knowledge about how to parent, how to start a business, homeschooling, financial literacy…the topics are endless.
