We recently connected with JC Carlson Katerri Casimir and have shared our conversation below.
Hi JC Carlson, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
We wanted something that embodies what we do and hope to be to players who use our products. ReRoll Crafts came after brainstorming some of our favorite things about Dungeons and Dragons. As a player in Dungeons and Dragons now and then, you can roll with advantage, meaning you get to re-roll your dice, hoping for a higher number. Crafts is a part of our name because we want to show that this is what we do. We are D&D players and dungeon masters. This is our craft. So, naturally, ReRoll Crafts was born.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
JC started playing D&D as a Dungeon Master during the pandemic to keep in touch with his friends while still exercising his improv skills and social distancing. This campaign is still running today with everyone trying to schedule in time on tuesdays. After the pandemic, JC decided to start another campaign with his other local friends who had expressed interest in learning how to play Dungeons and Dragons. Katerri was a part of that campaign and quickly realized why JC loved D&D. JC and Katerri are both very creative people, and started making gifts for the players at the party, which quickly turned into a business.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Our business has been self-funded from the beginning. Although it was difficult at times, we found it essential for us to be self-sufficient and reliant. We used savings we knew we could afford to lose and only put into the business what we thought was necessary at the given time. By finding strategic ways to save money on acquiring equipment and supplies, we made big jumps in our growth and production to solidify ourselves as a meaningful production. We also used each other’s strengths and a divide-and-conquer mentality to manage and maintain the business. There have been many trials, errors, and learning along the way, and we still have a long way to go, but we feel proud of where we are now and where we are headed.
How did you build your audience on social media?
We went through a much more targeted approach when trying to reach our audience, honing in on our tabletop gaming and role-playing niche. We visited them and the platforms they enjoy using, like Instagram and TikTok. Comedy and entertainment were our primary focus in terms of content to help grow and engage with our audience and catch fresh faces that are quickly swiping through the vast sea of video content. When building your content, try to keep it fun, genuine, and relatable, and make a following that cares and engages with your content to make social media platforms further push others like them to our content.
