We recently connected with JC Bravo and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, JC thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I new I wanted to become an artist after I met my Muse, she became source of inspiration and my wife. I met her in college and my love for her led me to a life of art. Originally I was studying psychology but after a few years I couldn’t deny my feelings and began expressing them through drawing and painting. This new passion made me have a change of heart and I decided to switch my major to visual arts. It was the best decision I ever made because the art Life has given me a joyful and meaningful existence .
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a contemporary artist who specializes in oil painting. I am inspired by art history, pop culture and personal experiences. I try to make my work a social commentary as well as autobiographical. I put a lot of emphasis on my style which I have termed SENSUALISM. My trademark motif is are characters called “cabezones”which means large head or swollen head. I adapt these characters to portraits of famous people in a series titled SWOLLEN ICONS. I am very proud with my paintings because they are meaningful and technically accomplished.
My goal is to inspire others by creating interesting work that gives them pleasure and challenges them at the same time.
I think what sets me apart from most artists today is my courage to reveal the hidden aspects of the human condition. I am not afraid of what people think of me because my love for art gives me strength to persevere and keep expressing myself honestly without compromise.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My dream is to one day publish a book of my paintings. This goal drives me to progress; to continue learning about my craft in hopes to make the best work possible. I would also love to leave art that my kids will enjoy in the future and hopefully allow them to receive some monetary compensation.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the freedom to work anytime I want and to create anything I want. The work itself is a joy, painting gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction. I also take pride in knowing that there are many fans and collectors that appreciate my work.
