We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jazzlynn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jazzlynn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career
The education system should focus more on teaching students how to think versus focusing solely on getting students to retain information. I believe schools should implement courses to help students control their thoughts and stay focused on their aspirations in life. I genuinely believe this puts one on the right path to a fulfilling life and career. With mental health on the rise, early on, students should be taught how to block out negative thoughts. Today, education seems to be somewhat of a memory game.
Jazzlynn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Jazzlynn, a licensed cosmetologist and the owner of The Pink Room, a beauty salon. In 2019 The Pink Room was established after facing the hardship of trying to find a salon home. One evening, the owner of the salon I was working at during that time contacted me to have all my things removed from the salon. The salon closing down caught me by surprise. I was not given notice and had to take action promptly. Immediately that sent me into depression because I had clients on my books with nowhere to take my appointments. The salon closing down with no notice was a blessing in disguise. I told myself I would never be in this position ever again. The only way to make sure this never happened again was to start working on establishing my salon. Today I am confident and in complete control of my career. I’m most proud of how my brand is growing. Not only is the brand growing, but it’s helping others. The Pink Room offers courses on luxury installs, helping other stylists enhance their careers. I’m also proud of how the products are constantly growing. We just came out with our latest shade Aruna. Aruna tape-ins are currently available for in-store pickups and online orders. The Pink Room now has six different shades of tape-in extensions.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Yes! I have been a licensed cosmetologist since 2014, working in a salon. After graduating from Prairie View University, I accepted a full-time job as a Human Resources Administrator at a steel and pipe yard. I was working in a male-dominated industry. At this time, I was only 22 years old and performing a job with serious responsibilities. I don’t believe it had anything to do with me being a woman, but because I was so young, I didn’t feel as if I was respected or taken seriously. After working for this company for two years, they notified me that the warehouse was closing down. Soon I got laid off, and this was another blessing in disguise. I told myself I wasn’t going to bother going back to work in Human Resources. I picked up doing hair full time; this was the best decision I could have made. I’m so happy they laid me off; I wish they had done it sooner. A sense of motivation came over me, and I was determined to excel in my hair career.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
For me, offering a wide range of services has helped me grow and maintain my clientele. I feel when you only focus on your specialty in the hair industry, that limits you. Trendy hairstyles are constantly changing. Today a stylist should know almost how to do everything and be good at it. Continually, I am attending classes to expand my knowledge and bring it back to my clients.
