We recently connected with Jazzlyn Rainey and have shared our conversation below.
Jazzlyn , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
A meaningful project I am currently working on as of now is with the North San Diego County’s NAACP ACT-SO, as well as a more personal project in trying to be a voice of positive representation for young black girls, women and people from my community and beyond. However a meaningful project I have always stuck with and have tried to build upon is how I portray myself as an artist and creative, who can be a vessel for the challenges as well as great achievements of Black people and the culture we live, breathe and continue to create and thrive in.
Jazzlyn , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, my name is Jazzlyn Arielle Rainey and I am a 17 year old self- taught artist, entrepreneur, and creator. Who has been painting and drawing for the last 7 years. I am also a member of the naacp, a two time gold medalist in Act-so, and have been awarded by my black city. I serve visual concepts that I see through my reality and create them into something visually understandable and easier to digest on canvas or paper. Most of my art is focused on the black experience, through Original semi-realistic and abstract works. I just recently started my official business this year, however I initially got into art, drawing and painting in 6th grade through my elementary school. I think what sets me apart from other artists/entrepreneurs in my field is my creative ability to put my experiences and projections as a young, Black, Woman with a strong but fluid message into physical creation and representation. Something I am most proud of is the community that surrounds me as well those within it who help me achieve my goals, while supporting the work I do in every way.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
A main goal that is driving my creative journey as an artist and creator, is to create the representation I wish I had growing up as a young black girl and creating thought provoking as well as beautiful visuals for those before and after my time. The positive visuals of beautiful, brave and inspiring Black women looking dope and being excellent in their most natural and raw form. While rocking a durag and breaking societies barriers and social norms of what it is to be a woman at that a Black woman in all her femininity as well as masculinity. A mission that drives my creative journey is to express my voice as well as create one for those who feel they aren’t heard, whether it’s in society as a whole, their classrooms, or even households.
How did you build your audience on social media?
The story of how I built and continue to build my audience on my social media platforms is still counting because I’m still using social media to grow and spread the message behind my art that I create. However I just keep posting and creating new art or ways to promote my art, I just post as if I were my audience looking in and post what I would like to see as a person looking at my page for the first time. But the best way to grow and build your presence and audience on social media is to post and make sure people are seeing what you’re doing no matter if it’s 10 or 10 million people. As well as sharing other people’s business and work, so they can share yours as a way of networking as well as driving that attraction.
