We recently connected with Jazz Inc. and have shared our conversation below.
Jazz, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Our first professional gig together was the defining moment when we wanted to take our craft to the next level. We had been practicing the setlist constantly every single day, to make sure we were putting our best foot forward. Although we had practiced like madmen the days before, there were still imperfections, such as trouble with the sound systems, and a last minute trumpet malfunction. Despite the imperfections, our energy onstage was unmatched, and we all agreed that we wanted to take our creativity to a higher level of professionalism. We didn’t let the small mistakes get to us, and pushed forward to an amazing result.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are Jazz Inc., a local youth jazz quintet that loves to experiment with the limitations of a five piece jazz band. Whether that is with new genres, unconventional instrumentation, or with just pure improvisation, we always love challenging ourselves more and more, and to find new ways of expressing our passion. All of our members have formal jazz education from some of the finest institutions in San Diego, such as the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, and the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra. We have played all around the greater San Diego area since 2020, and have plans to continue to spread our art to other cities.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The feeling of being onstage with the people you love, giving the audience what you have to offer. When we are in “the zone”, it gives us the freedom to not worry about the outside world around us. In that very moment, we are fiercely concentrated on only the music. Having that freedom to not worry about anything except the music at hand is a feeling that is very rare, however is eternally rewarding when you put the effort into obtaining it.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Continue to support local art! Giving artists a platform is only possible with an audience to provide that said platform. Going to local shows, buying merchandise of your favorite local band, or even just spreading the word gives us artists more opportunities to spread their respective craft. COVID-19 put a screeching halt on a lot of live music and performances, meaning artists were not able to grow for a long time. As society returns to normal, and more restrictions are lifted, artists are finding a new foothold in live performance. Attending live performances and spreading the word keeps the local scene alive and thriving.
