Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jazz Garcelle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jazz, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I have worked on is realising my debut EP “Music Therapy” I’d worked long months planning the entire event, from my set list to the venue booking, video and live audio recording, and everything in between. I did have a manager at the time that helped a lot mostly with connecting me with people, but I organized most of what I needed to happen for my event. I played a 50 minute set of my debut original music CD and cover songs, to a sold out crowd at the ACE Hotel, Pittsburgh in 2018. I had been working on my material for this project for 3 years on top of going through personal struggles years prior with my health. I had 2 blood clots and was in the hospital in 2016. The fact that I overcome that among other things in my life at that time was miraculous, and that fact that I am self motivated and pushed myself even harder to succeed with realsing my debut project and persevered despite my health issues or anything negative, because I knew I could do it. I am currently working on my next EP and mixtape.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been singing since I was 4 years old, I’ve always performed whether it be choir, talent shows, venues with a band. I am an independant music artist, the music I release is R&B. I am classicly trained vocalist and musicial theater. I also started doing creative direction on my music videos. I create the concepts and storyline of my videos. I perform at venues, in events, weddings, etc. I want my supportors and fans to know that my music is relatable and empowering. My brand is about empowerment, confidence, believing in yourself. I’m working on a screenplay for my next music video which will be a short music film. I’m also working on new material for my next EP. In my 9-5 I am an instructional Aide in a high school working with emotional support students. Having patience is a huge part of the success of my job.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2014 and again in 2016 I was diagnosed with DVT Deep Vain Thrombosis, being hospitalized for numerous days at first not knowing what was wrong with me but receiving this diagnosis. I wanted to get out of that hospital so bad and I remember telling my mom ” I just wanted to sing again, and be okay”. I am a fighter and have always been in my life since I was born 3 months premature and literally had to fight to survive. When I got out of the hospital in 2016 I worked and pushed myself even harder to get my music recorded and start the beginning stages of envisioning my debut music release, and what the creative vision for that would be. The amount of resilience I felt within me at that time, had almost never been stronger since I’d been born, and experienced a health-related event in my life. I knew I had to use the strength I possessed and self motivaztion to be able to go on with my life prior to my diagnosis and even today having a history of DVTs it makes me feel resilient and blessed knowing I made it through to the other side and am thriving now in all aspects of my life.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes when it comes to marketing and promoting my music and building my brand I wish I knew about Youtube ads, IG ads and other various ways of marketing my music better, I am now learning different strategies.
