We recently connected with Jazz and have shared our conversation below.
Jazz, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
Can we talk about the power in mastering the art of humility. That word best describes every bit of failure I’ve experienced. The moments where pride would not ask for help. Where pride would focus more on comparison rather than comprehension of how I could be of service. My biggest failures came from getting in my own way. So often the opportunities I had rested in the test of my character. We so often forget the beauty in failing forward because we are so busy in our own way failing backwards.
Life has no failures when you have perspective, only test that require a level of accountability. I think often of all the rooms I was allowed to walk in, I look back realizing I had the key to unlock those doors each and every time (thanks to God). Where I failed was believing. Believing I belonged. Believing that I could. Believing that I was able. God gave me a passion that held a purpose. Failure is when we do not utilize that passion to fulfill purpose. Your gift makes room because of the present of its presence.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I do so many things, but to simplify what I do I would label it as a music creative. I am a music producer, composer and songwriter. I have had the opportunity to work with creatives such as Rodney Dark Child Jerkins, Tyler Perry studios, Nickelodeon/Young Dylan, and more.
How I got into this industry started with my love for music. What carried me through was my passion for people. If it were not for building relationships I would not have had the opportunities I have been given. In this same sentence I would like to thank the beautiful souls that have met along the way who were selfless enough to grant me these opportunities. That is why I emphasize the importance of maintaining relationships not for the benefit of self, but for the opportunity to be of service. I’ve never been signed to a single entity, but I have a signed loyalty to helping those in what ways I can.
My purpose truly is in helping creatives grow in their passion and soar in their purpose. My mission is to connect the undeserved creatives to quality/lucrative opportunities. There is so much talent in this world and all it needs is the opportunity to be seen and heard.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There is a book I live by that I would say reshaped my approach to getting better in everything. I knew in order to unlock the power of greatness I had to unlearn the debts of laziness. Atomic Habits by James Clear reshaped how I gauged my wins. As long as I was taking the time and working towards getting better even if for a small portion of time, I was contributing to the best days of my life because I was steadily growing. I busted that book often when I feel I’m at a bit of a stagnant cross road.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was that you can’t accomplish this journey alone. This is something we all face simply because of expectations that lead to disappointments. We all can pull from traumatic situations. Those situation that dealt with people who disappointed and deflated our dreams, so much so that we look to carry the load on our own.
For the longest I thought I could do it alone. Firstly I had to let go of the trauma that created the ego that believed I could do it all on my own. Secondly, when I release ego I found myself changing how I ask this particular question. My question went from what can they do for me to how can I help them. Thirdly I had to show up not expecting the applause in return. When I showed up I showed up with everything I had which made the how and why so much more powerful.
Im so thankful for those who taught me these things. One being Erinn Knight a powerful female in the entertainment industry. A master at being of service and showing me why being a good person matters. I look up to her so much. I’m also grateful to be a part of a wonderful collective that teaches me that daily. The Vibe Tribe founded by Luke Crower another peer of mine who has exhibited the power in just being a good person. But that collective with my Birmingham family like Akil Prat, Classified Alias, Richard Daniel, Tae, KIT, so many more. It’s beautiful. Everyone in the tribe has shown me why showing up is so important. Not for myself but for the service of a bigger cause.
Everyone thinks there is some dissertations to success, but honestly if your morals align so will you. You can’t do this life alone and you sure can’t run a business alone either.
