We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jazmyn Duarte-griffin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jazmyn below.
Jazmyn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
Taking the ideas to pursue content creation took a lot of time. There was a lot of back and forth in my head about what people would think or what if no one likes it? I was in my early twenties and I saw others doing it and being successful but I wasn’t confident enough to fully immerse myself into creating content and putting myself out there. I had to get to the point where I wasn’t worried about anyone else. I knew that I could achieve whatever I set out to do because I’ve overcome many obstacles in my life. I honestly feel like I’m just now getting to a place in my early thirties where I really am comfortable with sharing my content and if it flops then at least I know I had fun creating it (getting paid is a bonus). As far as pursuing my esthetics career it happened so fast. I had the idea in my head and then I was in school learning and perfecting my craft within two months. I made sure I finished with all my clock hours a few weeks earlier than I was supposed to and made sure I took all of my licensure exams within two weeks of finishing. I was determined and I had already completed my business plan before graduation. I had a clear goal and vision for my aesthetics career and I was just focused on making it happen. I prepared myself for about six months, and then finally launched my business. Writing has been helping me a lot, anytime I have an idea I have to write it down and put it in a place where I can see it, once it’s out of my head and on paper it becomes more accessible for me to take action.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I always say my content creation journey started in 2018 but when I actually think more about it, it started when I was a little girl. Back then we had camcorders for home videos and I loved recording and watching them. As a teen I always had a digital camera, I made videos and took pictures of everything, but never had anywhere to share them. Content creation was always something I did for fun. I would gather my siblings and cousins and record skits, but I never thought I could make a career out of it. Fast forward to 2018, I became serious about sharing my content so I started posting more seriously on social media. I bought a ring light and brainstormed what I wanted my content to be about and how I would like to inspire and help others through my journey. I’ve always been passionate about beauty, fashion, hair, and just all things girly, so I decided that would be my focus. In 2020, I decided to go back to school while working a dead end job where I sat at a desk all day and was not happy after getting my bachelors degree. I searched and searched trying to figure out what I could go back to school for and not waste my time or my money and that’s when I stumbled across Esthetics. After doing extensive research I quit my job and started Esthetics School and during that time I was still pursuing my content journey as well. By the end of 2020 I was licensed and then began working in the esthetics industry. I worked at a few establishments and realized that I was the go-to for their marketing and content creation, but wasn’t being compensated for it. So, I decided to do it for myself. In 2021 I opened my own business Soul Glowful Beauty Studio, where I help women glow from within. I specialize in sugaring hair removal and skincare services and helped women who were dealing with hormonal disorders such as PCOS. I to struggle with PCOS and began sharing my journey through my content so it was important for me to help others through my services. Living with PCOS isn’t easy and I am able to not just service my clients, but I am able to connect on a deeper level because I understand how they are feeling through experience. Unfortunately, I had to close my business for an out of state move last year, but was able to take on content creation full time this past year. I’m currently creating UGC content for other brands and also helping other creators with content strategy. I’m in the process of revamping Soul Glowful Beauty Studio making it even better than it was before and am looking forward to sharing that journey with my audience soon. Through the years there has been a lot of research, learning, trail and error, faith, and character building that has gone into my journey and I’m still continuing. I am so blessed that I am able to do what I’m passionate about and I didn’t have to settle for less than. I’m a multifaceted creative and I’m able to use my creativity in my day to day tasks. Living in my purpose and being my authentic self is what I’m most proud of and there’s still so much more to come.

Have you ever had to pivot?
There have been many instances where I’ve had to pivot in my life but I must say one of the biggest pivots I’ve gone through is happening currently. Moving to a new state and having to start all over again is a huge challenge. I had to pretty much start from scratch I have no family, friends, clients, or connections. But instead of being afraid I’ve taken it upon myself to go to networking events to meet other creators, beauty professionals, potential clients and brands. I’m pitching myself to brands and I’m studying to be able to perfect my crafts. I’m in a totally new place and have a fresh mindset, I’m ready to get to work and so far I’ve seen tremendous growth within myself personally and professionally. Sometimes we can look at having to pivot as a bad thing or an inconvenience but my pivot has opened up my eyes and has allowed to really stop and restructure my life goals .

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to show up as myself while connecting with others that I don’t even know and inspiring people who I didn’t know needed to hear me maybe saying something positive. Teaching by sharing a beauty tutorial or something and they had no idea how to do it. It seems small when I’m doing it but you truly never know who your content reaches once it’s out there. I love to help others and I love to know that I’m doing that in someway.
