Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jazmine Valencia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jazmine, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about your team building process? How did you recruit and train your team and knowing what you know now would you have done anything differently?
When I started JV Agency, I was lucky enough to have a great team member come for the ride along with me, she was there from the beginning and her support is something I’m still grateful for to this day, I’m happy to say that she has grown into an amazing music executive of her own!
It’s not always easy to find the right talent, but as Richard Branson says, hire your weaknesses, and that’s something that I practice still to this day. I am able to identify the areas in which I need the most help and I hire people to help me fill those gaps. When looking to hire team members, I’d like to start within my network, people I’ve worked with, and people I trust, those are the recommendations I’m looking for. I also love hiring the interns I’ve had along the way, currently, we have a handful of our team members who were interns first, and as soon as they graduated school I brought them on to be part of the team! That’s something I like to do because that’s what happened to me early on in my career, so whenever I can, I like to pay it forward to the next generation of music leaders.

Jazmine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Jazmine Valencia (people call me Jaz, Jazzy, JV, or any combination of those letters)! I’m the owner of JV Agency, a music marketing firm.
I started JV Agency in 2015 when I saw there was a need for artists to have someone else help them specifically with their online presence. And before I knew it, I was helping over ten artists even though they were signed to major labels, management companies, and booking agencies, there was still a need for someone to come in help and connect all the dots with their digital footprint. Fast forward to 2023, digital marketing has become the number one way for artists to get their music in front of their fanbase! And with more platforms and outlets than ever, a musician needs all the help they can get to maximize their visibility and grow their audience.
I love getting a demo of an upcoming song and coming up with the marketing plan, the rollout, and everything that goes into getting a song out into the world for others to hear and sing along to. There are so many moving parts at all times, that is really a lot of project managing and making sure everyone is doing their part, no matter how big or small the artist team is.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
In the music industry, they always say is about who you know, and they say that for a reason! All of my clients have been through referrals and recommendations, which circles back to reputation, if you have a great reputation, you are going to keep getting people coming to you. In order to get a good reputation you need to be consistent, my results are consistent and I always go above and beyond what the client expects, this is what makes a good reputation!
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Is all about keeping an open line of communication. That’s something that I stress to everyone I meet, my door is always open, don’t be afraid to come to me with any questions/concerns/suggestions.
You might be seeing something from a completely different perspective than I am, so having an open-door policy makes it a great working environment, no matter what position you are in within the company. I know a lot of people that are afraid of their bosses or to speak up when something doesn’t seem right, and I think that’s the biggest mistake people make when managing others.
