We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jazmine Scott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jazmine below.
Jazmine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
I believ craziest thing that happened to me was being selected to be the lead stylist for a film sponsored by Queen Latifah for her Queen Collective series. I was only 2 weeks into stepping out on a leap of faith for my braiding business. I signed and created my website via Styleseat. From there, the director, B. Monèt contacted me and it was honestly a no brainer! She later invited me to the screening of the film in New York and I got to stand two feet from Queen Latifah herself!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey, my name is Jazmine Scott. I started braiding as a child. I am a child of 7 with 6 sisters. My mother couldn’t afford to pay for all of us to get our hair done at once and that sparked my interest to learn. This was before YouTube and other media sites were popular. I learned by sitting in my room and practicing on mannequins, then myself and later my siblings. Since the age of 14, I fell in love with braiding. I tired all styes I could think of, but I really had a knack for braiding. There’s something therapeutic about it for me. When I began college in 2011, I started charging my schoolmates to do their hair after class. After college, I began braiding in my studio apartment. I later move to a home and renovated an entire room for my hair studio. In December 2018, I was contacted by B. Monèt for the Queen Collective. Even then I was afraid to take a t and start my own business . But when I became pregnant with my daughter in 2019, I knew I couldn’t just continue my passion as a “side hustle”. It was time for me to officially become a business owner and started Jaz It Your Way LLC.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective thing you can do to grow your clientele is to truly be yourself. The clients that are for you, are for you. By being yourself, not only will you have people that genuinely welcome your business , but you will have created a network of individuals that share a common interest. It’s perfectly okay to hoo on the latest trends, as long as you Jaz It Your Way!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During the pandemic, it was tough. The level of uncertainty and lack of resources were astounding. I pulled through with the help of God and my most loyal clients. In 2020, for a year, I put money into my business without making a full profit back. I took that time to fully renovate the studio in my home which costed about $5000. The following year, I tripled my profits without having to put a dime of my own money upfront. While looking straight ahead one may not always see the finish line, but its there just through a sharp curve.
