We were lucky to catch up with Jazmine-Renae’ recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jazmine, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
If I could go back in time, I would definitely have tried to start my career sooner. I started singing in the church choir at the age of 5. Once I got to high school, I was in Chorus all 4 years and joined a girl group called Divine. We were only a group for about a year. In high school, I also met my now ex. We were together for 7 years. In those 7 years, I feel like I lost myself and my drive/love for music. I was too busy loving the wrong person who didn’t want for me what I wanted for him. Once we broke up, and I finally moved on, I got right back into it. I gained back my love for music and started releasing music, performing, taking voice lessons, etc. I, of course, wish i didn’t stop and may be further along right now, but it’s all a part of the journey and I have no regrets.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born in Boston, MA but been in Atlanta since the age of 5. Music was already in my genes before I was even born. My dad was in a group called Enuff Said. They didn’t get too far so I believe I was born to sort of take over where my dad left off. I started singing in the church choir at 5. As I got older, I fell even more in love with music, growing up with Michael, Prince, Destiny’s Child, etc. I was in Chorus all of high school. I didn’t really take the music seriously until about 2015. I released my first single entitled, “Too Good”. I’ve been releasing singles every year since. The feedback that I get has always been my motivation to keep going, good and bad. My proudest moment of my career has been the release of my single, “Green Light” in 2021. It was my most successful single with over 50,000 streams on Spotify, making it on the itunes R&B charts in the U.S., being played internationally, etc. Also, the video for my single, “Coral Gardens”, just hit 100,000 views on Youtube. That has definitely pushed me to keep going. The biggest obstacles I’ve faced in this journey is realizing who I am without comparing myself and my music to others. We’re all different in our own way and our journeys are all different. I have had to keep reminding myself that and I think it’s also pushed me to remain consistent. I have two more singles being released soon. A lot of people have been asking for a full project. Once these next couple singles are released, I think I’m finally ready to take that step!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
In the words of Queen Badu, “I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my s&#t!” We put a lot of work into what we do. It’s our prized possessions, our baby. So when we share our work with the world, we’re literally sharing a part of us. We know not everyone will like everything we release, but someone always will. And when we get great feedback about something so personal to us, it means the world.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
People think spending money is the only way to support. It’s a way, and it’s a great way, but not the only way. There’s so many other ways you can support without spending anything. Sharing content, commenting, streaming, showing up to shows, etc. It means a lot!
