Jazmine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I grew up watching and helping my mom do hair. When I came to college, I had no interest in doing hair. I actually wanted to work, what I thought to be, a “normal” job. Upon completing college, it became very difficult for me to find a decent job, so I settled for part-time positions. In order to make money, I decided to start doing hair again as a side hustle, and it quickly took off. 10 months after starting my business, I decided to pursue it full-time. I did lots of business research and took classes. I formed my LLC, placed myself on payroll, opened retirement accounts, built business credit, and more. I then decided I wanted to teach other business owners the same. I noticed being an entrepreneur became very trendy but no one was genuinely teaching others how to lay a proper foundation. Coaching is the part of my business that excites me the most.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up doing hair with my sister and my mom. In our city, we were known for providing quality hair services very quickly. Once I built my business to a point where I could afford my lifestyle and then some off of it, I decided to bring in employees. My business is now known for providing some of the best and fastest braid services in the Tallahassee area.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I began building my TikTok following after I relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. My advice to anyone wanting to build is to just be authentic. You have to show up every day and unapologetically be yourself. You will not please everyone, but many will love you. It doesn’t have to be perfect. The lighting, sound, or makeup doesn’t have to be perfect. Just show up with what you have, but show up every day. Being natural is much more relatable.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2021, I relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. While Atlanta was enjoyable, I found myself without company to share the experience. Moreover, significant events were unfolding within my family while I was away and alone. Given my avoidant personality, I typically keep myself busy. However, being alone in a new place and dealing with personal rebuilding made this period incredibly challenging. I started slipping into a state of depression. Rather than sinking further, I made the decision to pick myself up and return to Tallahassee, FL.
Instead of viewing my return as a failure, I embraced it as an opportunity to apply what I had learned in a larger city to initiatives in my smaller city. I initiated pop-up shops, hired assistants, organized boot camps, spoke at galas, and pursued various other projects.
