We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jazmin Rodriguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jazmin , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
As for my Social Media, I am the one that takes care of it. I love having control when it comes to my Social Media page because that is essentially my portfolio. Nowadays, your social media page is what influences people to decide whether they want to be a client or not. It serves as a review. I love the creative side of it when it comes to the content that I create/put out and the managing part of it as in when to put the content and the overall look of the page. Business owners can agree that it is a part-time job and it is a love/hate relationship but it is rewarding when you see your work put into action and how it can bring you clientele.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a 22 year old full time student at the University of Miami and the owner of Oh My Flan LLC. I am majoring in Advertising Management with a minor in P.R. I have always had a love for being in the kitchen ever since I was young and for owning a business. I started out by cooking with my dad when I was young and then in middle school (2011-2014), I started to bake sweets. The business world has always fascinated me and continues to do so. There is always something to learn about in all areas in the business world.
Oh My Flan was created in December of 2018. I offer a variety of flan flavors, tres leches, arroz con leche, icecream, and so much more. I also offer dessert stations or any type of party and dessert gift boxes for all holidays and any occasion. I like to help out the community by hosting food/toy drives as well as donating to charities or foundations. Knowing that I can help people by catering to their wedding or by donating food, makes me feel whole.
It takes a lot of organization and responsibility to run a business. However, it is really fulfilling to watch my ideas come to life and to experience the joy my desserts bring to my clients. I also appreciate the freedom in my schedule, the creative control, and the ability to earn as much money as I want when I run my own business. I look to continue to grow my business and personally as an entrepreneur.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Networking is a big part of growing your clientele and I go about that in different ways. The method that has helped me the most is using social media. I use Instagram, Tiktok, & Facebook on a daily basis where I create/upload content, keep my followers up to date on events/things that I may have going on, and I also connect with my current/new clients through there. Another way that has helped me tremendously is attending events around the city. I like to attend farmer’s markets & different events around Miami where I can meet many different people, make connections, and create relationships with new clients. As I like to tell people, “treat your social media page as part of your job and talk to people because you never know who you are going to meet.”
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Being consistent and authentic on social media are key factors in building your audience and what has helped me/continues to help me. My social media pages are my portfolio for clients to see what products/services I have to offer. Nowadays, that is the first thing people will check when they come across your page or hear about you. I have also connected with influencers and food bloggers that have posted a review about select products which has helped new clients discover my page.
As per my advice, people like to see that it is a real person behind the screen, it gives more of an authentic & real feel to your page. With consistency, comes reward. The more consistent you are on your page with content creation or just showing up on your stories, it shows your clients that are active and working. It is almost like an open sign. However, your content should be tailored to your page and not bombard the feed of others. Yes, you should be consistent but it comes down to quality over quantity. Consistency doesn’t have to be every day but a few times a week. I suggest making a content calendar or a schedule you can follow with days/times to post. Another suggestion is to look at the insights on your posts so that you can see what is performing better and what your clients interact with more.
