We were lucky to catch up with Jazmin Jervis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jazmin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is not defined by just one definition but instead on how accomplished you feel once you complete a goal. To be successful, you must think of things that make you happy in all aspects, including the career you set our for yourself. Additionally, you must always be a student in your field. Be open to learning new things in your field because things change often. If not, you’ll become stagnant. During this process, give yourself grace as you work towards your goals. Don’t overwork yourself and take time to rest when you need it. Without the rest, your performance can change negatively.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an event planner, decorator and designer. I include all three of these titles because each client may hire me in just one of these roles or all three. In the consultation stage, I ask my client how much or how little do they want me involved in planning to determine the role I will play in their event. Some events that I’ve done thus far have been baby showers, adult & kids birthday parties, dinner parties, picnics and more.
I officially started my business in October 2021. However, I have been planning and decorating for events for quite some time. One year, my mom told me that I was not having a birthday party, which made me sad. Being the convincing child that I was, she gave me $100 to spend and told me I could plan it if I stuck to this budget. As a result, I was able to get the invitations, decorations and food all within budget and the rest is history. Since then, I have planned events for family, friends, my college class as a student, and my sorority. Originally, I set out to begin this business later in life once I completed school and was established in my career. However, God and my village convinced me that I shouldn’t wait and my career plans have shifted. I am so happy that I made this decision and I can’t wait to see how I grow over the years.
What sets me apart from other event planners and decorators is that I try to meet my clients where they are. No matter what budget I am given, I do not let that hinder my ability to make their vision come true. I am most proud of the growth that I have had with only a year under my belt. Each event has taught me something different and I’ve adjusted my execution accordingly each time. I do my best to always be a student in my field so I am always looking to learn how to execute the latest event trends and expand my ability to do certain tasks. I want potential clients to know that if they do not see a particular service or design showcased from previous events, that does not mean I am unable to do it for them. This is just the beginning so as each year passes, my ability will increase with what I can offer.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Thankfully, most of my clients have been from recommendation from family, friends, and now past clients. I have been connected to some of my clients through a simple introduction. Additionally, I make sure to have contact information for my business when hosting so any potential clients are able to follow my social media or contact me personally. If an attendee is satisfied with the setup and my client lets them know that they have enjoyed my services, they become a potential client for any future events they may have. Overall, many of my clients have been obtained through word of mouth and I am so grateful for it.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
To start building my audience, I started with showcasing my business on my personal social media pages to receive support from my family, friends, and acquaintances. When I officially launched, my village shared my business on their personal pages to gain more followers locally and throughout the country. Any post that I share, whether its pictures from an event, a behind the scenes reel, or holiday celebrations, my supporters share it with their network to bring visibility to my page. To grow, I follow the trends on social media. In making reels and other videos, I utilize trending sounds so that my audience is more than just my followers. This has brought more followers to my page where there aren’t any commonalities. My advice for anyone is to utilize your village and network. Don’t be afraid to ask them to share any content for your social media to grow. Additionally, utilize the trending sounds to bring more visibility to your page. This does not mean that you do exactly what everyone else is doing but make it your own to show your uniqueness.
