We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jazmin Frias . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jazmin below.
Alright, Jazmin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
The biggest risk I’ve ever taken was during the pandemic. I lived in Dallas at the time and after being shutdown for 2 month I decided to move back to my hometown in Laverne, Oklahoma and buy a restaurant. I had waitressed before but other than that had no prior experience running a business much less a restaurant. For context I’m a hairstylist. I had no clue what I was getting myself into but I had a vision. I loved that in Dallas anywhere you go it’s an “experience”. I wanted to bring that to my hometown and also create a place where my family could work at. I still wanted to be a hairstylist as well so I came to the conclusion that I would open the restaurant for breakfast and lunch and in the evenings and weekends I would go to the salon and do hair. I figured it would only be for a short while, while I found more employees and then I could go full time at a salon again. Genius! I knew it would be hard work but again, I had a vision. I opened up “Oh Sweet Cielo” in my hometown. So two weeks before we closed on the building, the previous owner called me and said “we don’t have a cook, if you want send over your cook and she can start training” I didn’t have a cook at the time so I figured I would need to know all the positions anyway and I went for those two weeks. I created a menu it was simple American food with Latina flavor. It had been a sandwich shop before so I kept a few of their sandwiches added a twist on some, and created a few others. We also offered wraps, burgers, salads, iced coffees and specialty drinks. For breakfast I wanted something simple that we could handle. I remember telling my mom we were only going to offer burritos and her saying “you can’t have a restaurant with only burritos”. I did it anyway, we offered burritos and pastries for breakfast. And although I had no idea what I was doing I figured it out as I went. It was way harder than I ever thought it could be. I learned many skills during that time, how to cook, and take care of customers, clean the restaurant, come up with new items, how to have employees, keep up with the business side of things, marketing, finding distributors, just to name a few. During this time my mom and her husband were my biggest support, I could have not done it without them. So we did that for two years all while I was still doing hair. I would wake up at 5am be at the restaurant by 5:30am open at 6am and work until 3pm, then I would go across the street to the salon and take appointments 3:30pm-9pm. We did so good, and even though there were plenty of times I didn’t think I could do it, I kept on going. It was hard to find employees so I wasn’t able to be at the salon like I wanted too and that finally took a toll on me. I felt that both my businesses had so much potential for growth but I wasn’t able to keep growing either because I was splitting my time in half. After a lot of thought, I finally decided to put my restaurant up for sale. It had been a great investment and learning experience but I was ready to dive into being a full time hairstylist which is my true passion. And although it was the best and worst decision I ever made and definitely the biggest risk I’ve ever taken it taught me so much and gave me the skills that will be with me for the rest of my life. I still look back now and can’t believe I did that and that I was successful at it. Sometimes you just have to follow your gut even if you don’t know where you’re going or where it might take you. Take chances even if you make mistakes chances are you’ll learn something along the way. Follow your dreams and take risks.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Jazmin Frias. I’m a hairstylist and spend my time taking clients in Oklahoma and Dallas. I specialize in modern low maintenance blondes and brunettes and hair extensions. My love for hair has been there since I can remember. I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist when I graduated high school but was told I was “too” smart and “too” talented to just do hair. So I went to college for two years as an art major and hated every second of it. I didn’t want to go back so my parents let me go to hair school. And guess what? I loved it. I loved doing color and how it could transform someone. I have a background in art and I think that’s why I understand color so well. I loved being able to look at someone and see what would look best on them and then translate it on to their hair. I believe when you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good you can do anything. I love the transformation that happens during my chair, not just physically but in women’s confidence. There’s a shift that happens in the way a women looks at herself and walks after their service.
I’ve been in love with hair extensions since my senior year in high school. My first set were ones I ordered off of eBay — thankful that I’m passed that. But the transformations that happen both physically and emotionally are what I live for. It’s apparent with just hair color but with hair extensions multiply it by 100. The confidence they feel is life changing. I know it sounds dramatic but truly you can see it. I remember my first hair extensions client seeing her self for the first time and saying “I’ve always wanted hair like this, is this really my hair?” I never looked back, I’ve been certified in a few methods but nothing has ever compared to Invisible Bead Extensions which is what I offer exclusively. Invisible Bead Extensions is a luxury extension method that was created to blend seamlessly while protecting your scalp and natural hair. This method can give you volume, length, or both while allowing you to experience extensions in comfort. What I love about it, is their attention to detail, not only does it look good on the outside but your scalp and natural hair get better too. And that’s something you can’t learn in a one or two day certification course, it takes months to get fully certified and even then there’s always more education you can take and a community of hairstylist that are always more than willing to help. I love everything beauty and empowering women is my passion. I’m very creative and my mind is always on the go. I love learning new things and this also translates to the way I do hair. I believe the key to success is learning, growing, and changing. I take doing hair seriously and just like the ever changing hair industry, I’m always updating and mastering my skills by learning new things and stepping out of my comfort zone.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
We live in such a technology focused world, when it comes to social media if you don’t have some kind of online presence nobody will know who you are. Although social media is important and can be amazing for your business, the experience your guest receives in your chair can make your business. Have you ever went to a restaurant and had the best food and service, then you go home and tell everyone you know about it? I like to to focus on my guest experience, from the moment they land on my website I want it to create an experience. While in my chair I want them to feel like they’re the only one. I like to be as honest as possible, talk to them about their hair goals, what we can and can’t do, how to take care of it Twenty percent is what I do while they’re in my chair, while eighty percent is what they do at home, so I want to give as much information as possible for them to be successful with their hair. You can have the best looking Instagram around but it you’re guest aren’t coming back and telling others it will be hard to grow your clientele.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
When someone loves what they do and is really passionate about it, it shows. I enjoy the time I get to spend with my guest helping them feel confident. I also love to expand my knowledge and be surrounded by like minded people. I’m not above learning new things or changing the way I do something to get the best results possible. I think sometimes we can get complacent and think we know everything. I truly enjoy what I do and I think that translates behind the chair. I believe my guest look forward to it and know I’m always trying to master my skills, upgrade, or simply provide the best experience I possibly can. I get to come to “work” and it doesn’t feel like work at all.
