We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jazmaine Norris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jazmaine, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
When asked how I got into my career field, I always tell people it wasn’t on purpose. I was an educator prior to venturing off into the beauty industry. Leaving my safety net for a career I wasn’t too sure about was not apart of my agenda. I was so hesitant about leaving, that it took me 2 years before I actually said, ” Ok Jaz, what do we have to lose?’ Taking a risk on myself has probably been the greatest eye opener for me. Watching myself go through the trials and errors of it all. Trying to establish myself in a field that is forever growing. Making my mark one step at time, has shown me it was worth it all. This path was meant for me. The hardest part was the jump. Now you cant keep me from ledge.
Jazmaine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Jaz, the owner of Xsoterik Parlor. I specialize in full body wax services for males and transgenders. I’m also a hairstylist and published sfx artist. The beauty industry has always been apart of my life but I didnt take it serious until 2019. For 2 years I studied and practice all of my crafts. Making sure I was able to deliver the best service possible with the skills and the knowledge to back me up. Once i got confident enough to step completely out there, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Create a safe space for my clients to be themselves and get lost in my art. I believe that is what set me apart from other service providers. I’ve created a space not only for my clients but for myself as well. Being an introvert, I’m proud to be able to step out my comfort zone and provide happiness for others,. My clients are a reflection of me. One big happy rainbow. My mission states, “Only for the chosen few”. My space is not for everybody but I am for everyone. Once I realize that i begin to grow more.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal is to master our vision during this journey. Having a space for people like myself to let their hair down and enjoy a peace of mind. I always strive to ensure that will always be my main priority. The sky is the limit when it comes to Xsoterik. With that as our foundation, we are sure to surpass whatever goals are set to ensure the success of our business.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to be myself. I struggled trying to figure out what space was meant for me not knowing I was meant to create my own. Finding that individuality within myself gave me the ability to express myself in all my creative aspects. Not allowing specific imagery conform me gave me the power to say, “I am Jaz and no one can take that from me”.
