We were lucky to catch up with Jazlyn Sanders recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jazlyn, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My mission is to educate individuals and small business owners on financial literacy and what it means to be financially free and stable. I specifically focus on budgeting, money management, investing, and creating and maintaining good credit. These things are important in establishing financial stability for you and your family and your successful business.
Jazlyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I realized while I was getting my education that I had friends and family that didn’t understand the process or the importance of good credit or sticking to a budget. I know people that make money to spend money. A lot of people don’t understand the importance of a savings account until it’s too late. Can you imagine the interest you could have had if you started a savings account in high school or invested in one of your favorite companies?
I decided to major in accounting because a lot of people around me were starting new businesses. Everyone understood the marketing aspect and how to get themselves notice for the most part, but they didn’t fully grasp what they needed to know to maintain proper financial records. For example, not knowing how much it cost to make a dish at your restaurant could cause you to undercharge. Or not knowing how much your total overhead or materials is could potentially cause your business to lose money.
I have a Masters degree in Finance because I wanted to get a better understanding about investing. There are so many different investing methods that it could easily become confusing. It’s not that the methods doesn’t work, but it’s wise to pick a method and master it. I was introduced to investing as a teenager. The more I learned, the more I wanted to know because it was fascinating to me how companies will pay you to use their products. It went from learning about different companies and their growing potential to becoming interested in teaching others the joys of investing. I’ve had the pleasure of hosting a introduction class for those who want to learn more about stock alongside my mom.
After gaining my accounting and finance degrees I started looking into how I could use them to become more of an asset to people and not just adding numbers. That’s why I became an enrolled agent. An enrolled agent is a tax advisor, who is a federally authorized tax practitioner empowered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Enrolled Agents represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service for tax issues that include audits, collections and appeals. It is very important for businesses and individuals to obey all tax laws and maintain good financial records.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My pivoting moment in life and my business is when I decided to move from Birmingham, AL to Nashville, TN. At this time in my life I was fired from my accounting job because I contacted Covid from a coworker and according to my boss, took too long to recover. I moved during the pandemic without a job or even a plan. My goal was to succeed and in order to do that I felt I needed a change of scenery. Moving forced me to focus more on my goals without procrastinating or being distracted. Two years later, I have made great connections, gained more experience than I would’ve at that last job, and has realized my potential to be great is higher than I ever realized.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Something that helped me build my reputation with my clients is my empathetic nature and always wanting to see people win. I want to do my best to give every client a customized solution to their own unique issues. No two peoples financial circumstances are the same. My clients are all treated like family.
