We recently connected with Jayy Maadniss and have shared our conversation below.
Jayy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Daily I’m misunderstood/mischaracterized. Whether it’s from my name or my experiences with people. I’m human & a work in progress, yet I have a good heart & spirit. I love to help people, I love to connect people. I love to give people a spotlight. I love to listen to people. All these things are true, but I can mainly say I’m a big introvert & not used to a lot of attention. I’ve always been a loner, so i’m still getting used to people enjoying my art. All the love is much appreciated.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m PRO BLACK before anything else. I’m also a military brat turned vet, raised an only child by a single mother predominantly & interchanging village of good souls so I live by experiencing. My mom taught me how to read & write at a young age. Also taught me how to survive from her perspective which has helped me make it this far. Music & Hip-Hop is my passion. I wrote my first poem in 2nd grade & have been writing poetry & music since about 7th grade. Dropped my first mixtape in 2011. Fans are FAMILY. I’m always here for family. Difference between other artists & myself is I’m timeless. Time will show & prove it.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
The fact that I’m COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT. I dont get secret backing from labels. I started my journey from the ground up. I pay for everything out of pocket. It’s a slow grind , so look at everything I’ve done and see that blood, sweat, tears & sacrifices went into everything I have now. From being broke, to homeless, to restarting, health issues. Everything & I’m still here. God/The Universe has a plan for me.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Not necessarily resources, but I wish I taught myself how to do things myself, the correct way, to cut costs & the middle man. It’s expensive to make music consistently. Everyone must eat, so if you can cut costs by learning how to do things yourself or making deals with other creatives for a common goal, your journey will be much easier. Business MUST be fair. Young artists, don’t compromise yourself for clout. It’s not worth it in the long run. Trust me. Stay true to yourself & your word. Ask yourself if your family would be able to listen to your music.
