We recently connected with Jaywall and have shared our conversation below.
Jaywall, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
The first money I earned from Music was through Distrokid. Which is an online platform where you could distribute your music to major platforms, such as Apple and Spotify. When I received my first dollars from creating music. I immediately knew new in my head that I could make a living from what I’m putting out. I knew that if I could find a way to promote my music and get it to more ears, those ears would share my music just because of the message. So then the race began.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Jaywall was born Jaylen Wallace the year of 2000. He was raised in South Florida where majority of his time was spent playing football growing up.
The same year he enrolled into the Firefighter Academy was the same year Jaylen grew a love for music. Once he figured out that’s what he wanted to put his passion into; he approached the game from a serious angle immediately. He went out and purchased every piece of studio equipment that he needed to start making his own music. Even with him growing up down south; he pulled major influence from artist in other regions like Lil Durk, Lil Baby, and Tory Lanez. Jaylen started to release his first songs spring of 2019 going by the name Jaywall. The nickname was given to him young by a childhood friend that stuck during his high school years. He started to gain traction quick through-out the year of 2019 from fans in different states and countries. It wasn’t til October 2020 single, “Him,” that broke through worldwide on SoundCloud accumulating over 35 millions of plays in a matter of months.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
To be careful who you trust. There was about two years in my career where I was dealing with management, who didn’t have the same creative vision as me which restricted my site, and the things that I truly wanted to do for my music. The songs that I wanted to put out, the videos that I wanted to shoot, and I wanted to present myself. But they had industry ties and relationships that I thought I couldn’t gain access to without them, it kept me in the situation that I didn’t need to be in and around people that undervalued what I had to bring to the table.
So the backstory to that is trust your gut as a young artist. Always remember your vision from day one and don’t let anybody deter you from it.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
For a long time I used to put on my Music without promotion on SoundCloud, and all other platforms. I wasn’t receiving the feedback or plays that I wanted to, even though I know after a certain point I was putting out quality music. So then it drove me to YouTube and that’s where I started to look up different, promotional and ad Strategies that I can use to push my music to new audiences and years. And over the years what I’ve gathered is that the best way to promote your music is through organic reach. There’s no other promotion that’s better than that which means that you have to dig deep And really give the people something that they’ve never seen before. And I know at times it could be challenging and for artist that watch a lot of videos and I’ve heard the same things. It can feel frustrating but everything they’re saying is true, you just have to be better.
