Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jayne Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jayne, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Let me start from the beginning—three years ago. On my 44th birthday (literally), my husband dragged me to the ER where my blood pressure was 289/185. After a boatload of tests, the ER physician diagnosed me as severely diabetic and told me, “For the rest of your life, eat lean meats and salad.” She sent me on my merry way. What she didn’t tell me was I was going to wake up with no eyesight for the next 3 weeks of my life. Here’s the good news: in 6 months, I was insulin free, diabetic medicine free, sugar free, 60 lbs lighter and my vision was back to near normal. I’ve worked in politics (former Senate aide and worked for a Governor– and didn’t want to tell people what I just went through. I’m now a lawyer, former college professor, started a nonprofit for individuals with disabilities and love life to the max. Full of energy and fun. I started posting pics on my social media of new sugar free recipes I was experimenting with. Our daughter came home from college and suggested I start “No Sugar Baker” on social media. Just to make her happy, I did just that along with a cool “tell it like it is blog.” That blog was an instant hit with similar women. In 3 years, I’ve done hundreds of tv and print interviews (google Jayne Jones) created over 250 recipes, launched a product on QVC this year to 3 record sell outs, published two cookbooks and have over 175K followers.
Now, this is where you come in. The story isn’t all sugar plums. You see these past ten months have been life changing and my faith has never been stronger. In fact, part of this journey has brought me to my knees in complete awe and wonder. I keep telling myself, “Be still and know.”
Here’s the past ten months:
• In June 2023, I felt like I had a bad case of the flu and started vomiting–After a week, my husband again brought me to the ER. This time I don’t remember anything about the visit. My blood pressure was 70/30. Yo, yikes.
• The ER discovered a large kidney stone, said it was normal procedure to insert a kidney bag to release the pressure and proceed the following day. My husband left to get some rest.
• At about 1 am, out of the blue, I was able to page the nurses. I told them I wasn’t feeling well.
• I went into cardiac arrest twice, received CPR twice, transferred to the ICU and placed on a ventilator. There was sepsis under the kidney stone and I went into septic shock. My husband came dashing back to the hospital, where he didn’t leave my side for days.
• They say I was the 1% you read about in medical textbooks—more than majority don’t survive. 1%.
• I remained medically sedated/ventilator for 72 hours. I came through—and shared a few recipes and hockey stories with the ICU nurses—not missing a beat and not realizing anything I just went through.
• I was transferred to a stabilization floor and released from the hospital 72 hours later with a walker and requiring 24/7 care from my husband, mom and a home health nurse including IV antibiotics.
I’ve had surgery to blast the 26 mm kidney stone (that is 5 times larger than what doctors believe to be a large stone), been to a handful of doctors with nurses all wondering what I remember and how I feel. It’s like a medical case experiment right before their eyes.
I’ve had nightmares—including seeing the “lights” and “reading my own obituary.”
My faith has never been stronger. My life wasn’t meant to be over.
Today, as I write we are in Orange County ready to relaunch No Sugar Baker, after sitting idle for health reasons, this time instead of a retail product, we are introducing No Sugar Baker Frozen Cookie Dough as a bulk food service item. Why? Because when I was in the hospital, the dining staff had to literally go to the local grocery store to get “sugar free” nutrition for myself. This isn’t right. Mission continues!
We have an opportunity to make an impact by sharing this story and informing others.
Jayne, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
No Sugar Baker has launched America’s first no sugar frozen ready to bake cookie dough in January 2023 on QVC and was carried in over 165 stores in the first three months. Jayne has two cookbooks, a national blog and a fierce energy to make a difference. She lives and breaths life as a diabetic—with her husband saving her life twice! He’s a hockey goalie and says, “This is he’s best saves ever!”
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I believe I answered this in the first question–clearly, when you are in cardiac arrests, septic shock and received CPR twice as a 48 year old AFTER launching your first ever food product just 6 months earlier, you learn to pivot. You learn about what really matters in life, the value of life and the balance needed for a healthy lifestyle.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
We rushed. Lesson learned. My dad, a smart business man, before his unexpected passing in November 2022, told me, “Do me a favor don’t give away the farm.” He knew me too well. I was under the gun with a national shopping network and one major grocery store chain asking for product inventory. We were brand new, being lobbied daily by brokers, manufacturers and bag/pouch suppliers. Everyone wanted to rush us. We went with the very first offer we received. That was simply dumb.
