We recently connected with Jaymie Belknap and have shared our conversation below.
Jaymie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I find immense joy in being an artist; through photography and specializing in the whole film photo processes. The creative journey lets me express my vision and connect with others through an unconventional form of communication. In running both my film lab, and freelancing as a photographer, these add an entrepreneurial dimension, offering rewarding challenges. While the path of an artist and entrepreneur has its demands, I wouldn’t trade it for a regular job. The freedom to pursue my passion, set my artistic direction, and build something meaningful is incredibly rewarding. Reflection moments are part of the creative process, not a desire for a regular job. They are opportunities to reassess and evolve my artistic and business endeavors. I’m genuinely happy, continuously growing, learning, and pushing my boundaries.
As an artist, I’ve not only developed skills but also found profound confidence. Creativity is transformative, helping me understand myself. Each artistic endeavor deepens my connection to myself and the world around me. This confidence positively influences how I approach challenges in both art and entrepreneurship. Knowing my unique vision has a place in the world is powerful.
Running the only digital film lab in Spokane has presented challenges but contributed to my growth greatly. The confidence gained as an artist helps navigate entrepreneurial complexities with resilience.
I’m not only happy, but fulfilled as an artist and entrepreneur. This journey shaped my professional identity and built my confidence as a person, allowing me to embrace artistic expression and self-discovery. This fulfillment is something I never found in a “9-5” regular job, keeping me motivated on this unique journey.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Jaymie Belknap, I am a passionate photographer, artist, and entrepreneur dedicated to the art of analog (film) imagery and the full scientific process within it. My journey into this industry began over a decade ago with a profound love for the authenticity and unique qualities inherent in the processes and outcome of film photography. Inspired by the timeless and intentional allure of analog photography, I decided to channel my creativity into building a brand that not only captures moments and allows my artistic expression, but also offers an artistic service for other film photographers within my community and out, sharing my process with them.
What sets me apart as a photographer is the fusion of my artistic vision while capturing moments, with the meticulous scientific process to developing film. This blend allows me to offer clients not just photographs but tangible memories, each with a unique texture and character that modern digital processes often lack (and negatives that’ll last lifetimes past us).
From the moment I pick the film stock, then loading it into my camera, to processing and scanning the film myself.. start to finish, the whole image is made by me, with my hands. Many individuals and artists seek to recapture the authenticity and emotion that film photography provides through digital means, and my services bridge that gap. Preserving the essence of film photography within a digital age.
One of the key problems I aim to solve for clients is the challenge of maintaining access to film processing in Spokane, preserving the artistry of photography within a digital age. The digital film lab isn’t just a service; it’s a commitment to preserving the artistry of film photography in a contemporary world, especially within Spokane, a city where film and labs were wiped out during our shift to the digital age. Many individuals and artists seek to recapture the authenticity and emotion that analog photography provides. My services bridge that gap, preserving the essence of film photography within a digital age.
The positive feedback and stories from my photo commissions and lab clients who have rediscovered the magic of film through my work are incredibly rewarding a main reason for me continuing this service for my community. For potential clients, I want them to know that my brand is not just about providing a service; it’s about curating an experience. Whether you’re a photographer seeking a film processor, or an individual looking to capture special moments with the unique touch of film, my brand is committed to delivering quality, artistry, and a connection to the rich history of film and photography as a whole.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being an artist is a deeply fulfilling journey for me, going beyond just being a photographer. It’s about expressing my unique thoughts and emotions, creating a personal and subtle form of communication. Through this creative process, I experience personal growth, constantly learning and overcoming challenges, which brings a sense of accomplishment. Building connections, whether with followers or fellow artists, adds depth and meaning to my artistic journey. Knowing that my work can impact society and inspire thought is a powerful motivator. The autonomy to choose projects and the freedom to explore my own vision fosters a sense of independence. The idea that my art could become a lasting legacy or meaningless once I’m gone is both humbling and motivating. Ultimately, the intrinsic satisfaction I derive from creating art makes this journey profoundly fulfilling on a personal level.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Establishing and sustaining community spaces devoted to artistic expression offers artists valuable platforms for showcasing their work. Ensuring fair compensation for artistic contributions, fostering active public engagement through events, and leveraging digital platforms for art distribution play crucial roles in broadening the reach and impact of art in our society. Additionally, when artists recognize and assert their worth, it contributes to an overall increase in the industry’s average pay, benefiting everyone involved in the artistic community. This recognition of value also influences the public to perceive greater worth within art services, further elevating the appreciation for artistic contributions.
