We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jayme Fleming. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jayme below.
Jayme, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I’ve baked for many different occasions, family events, birthdays, work related events, and I would always get told “man that is so pretty and smells so good but I can’t have it because of (diabetes or other dietary restrictions).” I began to focus on also making things that people with those restrictions could enjoy as well. I created Bluejay’s Baking and Catering so that they could have a person to go to and get quality baked goods without having to compromise on the taste!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began baking when I was in highschool. I have always had a passion for making things pretty and taste amazing. I began my bakery in 2020 when I decided to pursue making sure everyone could have a beautiful cake or baked good without compromise. I began working on sugar free, gluten free, keto and vegan baked goods as well as the regular sweets so that I could offer a wide assortment for anyone in need. I believe what sets me apart from others is my attitude and my drive to make sure I make what you dreamed in your head come to life in front of you. I take the time to get to know my customers and make sure they get exactly what they are wanting and I am so proud of doing just that.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Word of mouth helped me. As a small business owner working to make this a big business word of mouth has been my best form of building my reputation. A lot of my clientele came from referrals and people who may have had my baked goods at a get together for someone else.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that this business would be easy. No business is going to take off overnight. I had to learn that it takes time, patience, dedication and drive. You have to love and believe in yourself enough to get through those moments where you want to stop and shut it all down. You have to continue to fight.
