We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jayme Arnold a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jayme, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The story behind the book, so to speak. We took our love of reading, my love of writing, and the skills we brought together to make up our Under The Cover Book Boxes. I was previously doing what’s called a blind date with a book at a local farmers market and it was a big hit. People really enjoy the surprise of not knowing what book they’ll get. But what really brought us up in the industry right now, is the Author of the month book boxes we offer with a subscription. Our readers have the choice to keep the author of the month box, swap it for a blind date with a book, or they can skip their month entirely. It is their choice. We have things in place, so that you don’t end up with a book you already own as well.
Jayme, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We provide multiple avenues for book readers to support indie authors as well as those under big publishing houses. We feel all authors should have the chance to be seen in their work especially when it is EXCEPTIONAL! We want to spread the joy of reading and hope to start donating to public libraries or something of that nature to give back to the community as well. Each box is crafted for each customer based on their questionnaire answers for our blind dates with a bbook. Once they fill that out we know what kind of book and extra goodies to add to your box! We are just over 700 followers in less than 2 months! We have grown quickly and are excited for this literary adventure to continue to connect us to more and more amazing people. All the authors we have collaborations with have been extremely wonderful and fun to get to know. We take serious pride in our authors. We read the books before we publish anything at all so that the audience gets the full experience.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met Leia, my co founder/ business partner in 2017 when I first moved back to Michigan. My first job when i moved back was where we met! We have been life long friends since. She knew how much this meant to me when I started the blind dates at the farmers market and knew she wanted to help me make it a reality and she has been with me every step of the way. We also work together at our typical 9-5 so it makes it easy to work with your best friend when work is how you met to begin with! Our beginning is simple. I walked in to an interview for a job, which was a staffing agency. So it wasn’t to work there originally. But they loved me so much they hired me to work for them instead! The rest is history.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Honestly? Perseverance is the key. Keep pushing for that door to open, keep trying new ideas, and never let a set back hold you back. Learn from your mistakes and create the ability to adapt to any situation. Keep posting, keep interacting with your followers and give them what they want! Which is someone to follow for a good read, or someone to talk to. These reader groups are huge in the industry right now and all these book boxes and book Instagrams are extremely popular. Getting a signed copy of a book you love or even one you’ve never seen is always so special. The feeling I get when I receive a book in the mail, that’s the feeling I’m trying to recreate for our followers and customers.
