Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaylon Teague. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jaylon, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I manage my own social media across most platforms. For example I have Instagram, tik tok, Facebook and YouTube. They all serve different purposes based off the engagement that I get and the audience. I made the choice to manage my own social media because I like to be hands on with my own socials. I have a very strong social media presence as far as quality post. I don’t just post anything and everything is posted strategically. The results across different platforms have been different but always works in my favor. Through the different social media apps I know what to expect. Tik tok I used for a lot of my car content, racking up more than 865,000 views and 67,000 likes. My YouTube I post vlogs and music videos. Some results from YouTube would be over 155,000 views and 1.8 million impressions. My watch time is also over 10,000 hours on YouTube. With tik tok and YouTube, those are my top 2 platforms that I have the most engagement on but Instagram and Facebook is where all those people come from. I promote a lot on Facebook and Instagram. My numbers aren’t the biggest but with instagram I know how to maximize my outreach whenever I do post. It is all about having supporters that’ll repost or send your post out to their followers. Some lessons would be to learn your audience and what specific thing your promoting and know the simple things like when and what time people are on their phones and know when to post and what to say under captions to make everything come together perfectly. Every post isn’t going to go your way or do crazy numbers but if you stick to your plan it’ll all work out for you.
Jaylon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my film business in 2019 just recording football highlights and different school activities at my school. So with that being said my entry into the film industry or entertainment industry would start with my first behind the scenes shoot with shotbywolf. He was someone at the time I saw that was young and his work was hard. I reached out to be behind the scenes of his shoot and he invited me out and ever since then just getting inspiration from others really helped but reaching out and networking is the main factor in every Opportunity I’ve got. Every entertainer or person I’ve worked with that had a high status came from simply reaching out and being vocal. As far as my film business I provide service for anyone and anything that can be recorded and published on a professional level. I do lot of music videos and vlogs but that’s not all I do. I’ve done car commercials as well as brand shoots for anyone with a brand. The way I like to operate is very versatile and equipped to whatever the person or brand that books me want. I feel like me being able to make anything someone wants content wise come to life exactly how they wanted it with my own twist is what sets me apart. Don’t get me wrong I love my style but the best way to make customers happy is to adapt and grow with what you have and for what your trying to achieve. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come just from the simplest things like the gear I have but also the people I’ve met and the rooms I’ve been in. I would’ve never imagined it.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for new clients is through your existing clients. There are plenty of ways to get new clients but for me it’s always easiest through people I’ve already worked with. It makes whoever the new client is more connected because of the mutual trust.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
My main thing when I started film was just to learn the camera so while doing that I was a full time student athlete in high school. I went to college for baseball and never had film as a career in my mind until college and baseball didn’t work out. With that happening it motivated me to learn the camera every more and investing into my own first Sony camera which was the Sony A600. It wasn’t the best but it was a start. From then on I dedicated hours of research to develop my knowledge on film and the camera itself. As time went on I had jobs here and there but mid 2022 is when I went full time into my film business where I made enough money to make it my full time job. Today it is still growing and can only get better. I would say for most of my key milestones would be me purchasing my camera lenses or lights. Really any gear in general because the ones that know about the film business it is expensive. So the way I look at is when I get new gear it’s an upgrade on how it’ll look on my camera or the published look which adds more quality not just to the camera but towards me.
