We recently connected with Jaylan Parent-Ongel and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaylan, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
At Just Skin by Jaylan, I focus on the health of my client’s skin overall. I don’t focus on upselling a more expensive treatment, I don’t encourage trendy TikTok skincare hacks, and I certainly don’t upsell $150 moisturizers. The industry is so quick to upsell, fib, push product, etc. and that just isn’t in my heart. If someone comes in wanting a $150 service, but that won’t benefit them as much as an $80 service, I will be very upfront about that before beginning their appointment. I find that honesty and compassion go a lot further with clients than running a money-grabbing business and I am very proud to stick to that, no matter how difficult the industry makes it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started as an esthetician three years ago. I wanted to get licensed so I could do wedding makeup – once I got into my program I was actually more interested in the ingredients and science behind the products for skincare. It was a bit of surprise, only because I was totally turned off from being a makeup artist and wanted to dive right into the skincare and health skin aspect of things.
I offer an array of different skin treatment services ranging for anti-aging specific to acne specific. I can tailor all services to each individual client based off of what their needs are at that time. I will set up a routine for my clients, and if it needs to be altered at some point, that can happen – the routine isn’t the ‘end all be all’ at Just Skin by Jaylan.
My biggest factor that sets me apart from others in my industry is I’m in the industry because I truly love to see the happiness on my client’s face when I have provided them the results they were looking for. I’m very honest with my clients. We start their process by focusing on skin health. After we get them situated, back on track, and their barrier is level, we can get into more intensive treatments to work on their issues.
I am proud of the way I run my business and the way I treat my clients. I have a very specific standard I hold myself to for my clients and I stick to that very well – I think they would also agree with that if you asked them.
I’d love for everyone to know that skincare doesn’t have to be expensive, and it doesn’t have to be stressful. Also that it isn’t just a luxury, it is just as necessary as your doctor check ups or getting your teeth cleaned.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Keeping in touch with your clients is the most important aspect of your business. I touch base with most of my clients on a monthly basis through text, give or take. I always wish happy birthday or anniversary; whatever the occasion might be if I am aware of it. I also send monthly emails to my clients with new specials, new products, and some small education piece.
My biggest thing I think that my clients appreciate is that I treat them like they are real humans, and not just my clients. They truly mean something to me. I cherish the relationships I have built with my clients and they continue to come back month after month.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I opened Just Skin by Jaylan, it was in the same month that I had finished my last chemotherapy session for breast cancer. We also were moving – all in or nothing is how I operate usually LOL. Anyway, I had been toying with the idea of opening my own spa at some point but never did I expect it to be WHEN I did. I distinctly remember ringing my chemotherapy bell, then heading to Homegoods for decor and furniture for my spa. I remember so many people being so proud and concerned all at the same time for multiple reasons. I think it was a lot of process for those around me, because they just wanted me to take a minute and breathe. I am not that kind of gal. The opportunity presented itself to me to open at that time and I knew that I could not pass it up. It was exhausting, some tears were shed, and some doubt crept in. All in all, I would not have traded that journey for anything because it set me up perfectly for where I am at now.
