Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaylah Estina. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jaylah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
Balancing my pre-med studies with my passion for makeup artistry and art has presented some unexpected challenges. One significant issue I’ve encountered is dealing with creative blocks. As an artist, my work relies on inspiration and creativity, but there are moments when ideas don’t flow as easily as I’d like. It can be frustrating and hinder both my artistic output and my motivation to create.
Another unexpected problem I’ve faced is a decrease in the number of clients. While the makeup artistry and art industries are often perceived as glamorous and lucrative, the reality is quite different. The assumption that it comes easy and brings in easy money is a misconception that many people hold. In truth, building a successful career in these fields requires dedication, hard work, and continuous self-improvement. Unfortunately, due to the current shortage of demand in the industry, I’ve experienced a decline in the number of clients I used to have. It can be disheartening when others overlook the challenges we face and assume that success in this field is easily attainable.
It is crucial to educate others about the realities of being a makeup artist and artist. Many people fail to understand the time, effort, and skill required for our work. It goes beyond applying makeup or creating art; it involves understanding individual needs, enhancing features, and expressing emotions through our craft. By raising awareness about the complexity of our professions, we can foster a greater appreciation for the artistry and value behind what we do.
Being a pre-med college student has taught me the importance of continuous learning and adapting to an ever-evolving landscape. This mindset has motivated me to explore alternative avenues and expand my skill set. I have sought out additional courses, workshops, and collaborations to further enhance my knowledge and stay ahead of the curve. By diversifying my skills, I can not only improve my capabilities as a makeup artist and artist but also contribute to my overall personal and professional growth.
The combination of being a pre-med student, makeup artist, and artist has broadened my perspective and taught me to manage my time efficiently. Despite the challenges, I remain dedicated to both my academic pursuits and my artistic passions. It is through this multidimensional approach that I hope to make a positive impact in the makeup artistry and art industries.

Jaylah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
From a young age, I have always been drawn to art and creativity. However, it was the world of makeup that captivated me and became a true passion. I vividly remember spending my summer breaks experimenting with theatrical makeup looks using my grandmother’s makeup and recording myself on her iPad. These early experiences ignited my fascination with makeup artistry.
Although I had been exploring makeup as an art form, it wasn’t until my sophomore year of high school that I started taking it more seriously. I began documenting my makeup work on myself and my cousin and shared it on social media. To my surprise, people started noticing and showing interest in my skills. Requests started pouring in for events, proms, fashion shows, and weddings. It was a humbling experience to be able to provide these services from the comfort of my bedroom.
As my passion grew, I realized the importance of perfecting my craft. I took it upon myself to continuously learn and refine my techniques. This dedication led me to offer a diverse range of services to cater to different needs and occasions. Whether it’s editorial makeup, evening makeup, wedding looks, or natural beauty enhancement, I pride myself on being versatile and well-rounded in my abilities.
One of the problems I solve for my clients is helping them discover the transformative power of makeup while maintaining their unique features. I have encountered women who may have felt uncertain or inexperienced when it comes to makeup application. In those instances, I take the opportunity to educate and empower them. I share my knowledge of various products, techniques, and proper application to enhance their natural beauty. It brings me great joy to see their confidence grow as they learn to express themselves through makeup.
Reflecting on my journey, what I am most proud of is how far I have come and my unwavering focus. Despite starting from humble beginnings, I have persevered and consistently pushed myself to excel. Through dedication and a genuine love for my craft, I have expanded my skills and developed a unique style that sets me apart.
To potential clients, followers, and supporters, I want them to know that my brand is built on passion, authenticity, and continuous growth. I am committed to delivering exceptional results, tailored to each individual’s desires and needs. By choosing my services, they can expect professionalism, attention to detail, and a personalized experience that will enhance their natural beauty.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative, for me, encompasses several elements that bring immense joy and fulfillment. Firstly, having the luxury and opportunity to pursue my passion and make a living from it is truly a blessing. Being able to wake up every day and engage in the work that brings me immense joy is a gift that I cherish.
Additionally, witnessing the tangible results of my artistic endeavors is incredibly rewarding. Each time I complete a piece of artwork or execute a creative project, there is a sense of accomplishment and pride that washes over me. The realization that I am capable of bringing my artistic visions to life is a constant source of inspiration and motivation.
I remain deeply humble, but it is undeniable that I surprise myself daily when I explore new techniques, experiment with different mediums, or take on challenging projects. This sense of continuous growth and discovery is both exhilarating and fulfilling. Looking back at how I started and witnessing the progress I have made along the way is simply amazing. It reminds me of the transformative power of dedication and perseverance.
Moreover, knowing that my work has the ability to inspire others is truly rewarding. Whether it’s my supporters, fellow artists, or even my younger cousins who look up to me, the impact of my creative expression is profound. I strive to be a source of inspiration and encouragement for those who share my passion or aspire to pursue their own creative endeavors. The ability to touch others through my art and spark their imagination is a rewarding experience beyond words.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that success was solely measured by external validation and achievements. The backstory behind this lesson is rooted in societal expectations and the pressure to conform to a particular definition of success.
Growing up, I was constantly bombarded with messages that equated success with high grades, prestigious titles, and material wealth. As a result, I became fixated on achieving external markers of success, believing that they would bring me happiness and fulfillment.
However, as I embarked on my personal and professional journey, I gradually realized that this perspective was flawed. I observed individuals who possessed all the trappings of success yet seemed unfulfilled and unhappy. Their accomplishments, while impressive on the surface, did not necessarily translate into genuine happiness or a sense of purpose.
Through introspection and experiences, I unlearned the notion that success was solely defined by external factors. I shifted my focus to understanding and nurturing my own passions, values, and personal growth. I recognized that true fulfillment comes from aligning my actions with my authentic self and pursuing what brings me joy and a sense of purpose.
