We recently connected with Jayla Eskridge and have shared our conversation below.
Jayla , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Some may call it a risk, I call it taking a leap faith. Starting my own business and putting my feet into the real estate world was the best move I could’ve possibly made.I knew I always wanted to do something along the lines of owning property and interior design but I wasn’t where to start. I researched on how to start short term rental and started praying on that vision and listening to God when he told me to pursue my dream. You have to know that you are going lose some money while investing in your self…that being said, I went after that short term rental vision and got my first property in Houston, Texas with realistic expectations. I remember going down there and setting up and I was like “is this even for me” but I knew God wanted me to depend on him and remember he wouldn’t put me in a place that I’m not qualified for. I got my property furnished after a few trips down to Houston and shortly after I posted my property. When I tell you the next day I was getting bookings back to back! I can’t do nothing but Thank God. Remember having faith as a size of a mustard seed Matthew 17:20. I will continue to walk by faith and not by sight 2 Corinthians 5:7. I learned not to ever give up on my self and it’s not how you start it’s how you finish.
Jayla , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The one & only Jayla Eskridge! A young woman who decide to take a leap of faith and start her own business.
Eskridge properties , is something I want to pass down to generations in my family and not just stop at me. In the future I want to make sure my family owns land & property. I want to be able to teach people that you can and WILL own and can be the lender not the borrower! The head & not the tail! Building generational wealth starts with someone and let’s just say it’s starting with me.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When I first started putting together the vision for my business I did wonder how I was going to fund it. Once I started being strict on saving my money and not just buying unnecessary things I didn’t need at the time. The second I taught my self about business credit and getting funding for my business. I built my business credit in a span of 3 months and then applied for business credit, which is where I got most of my funding to purchase my furniture for my unit.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that everyone was going to show up and support my vision. I then learned that everyone is not going to support me, but I made sure that didn’t stop me from losing sight of my vision. If God told you to do something do it, don’t worry about what Man are going to say because they are not the one that gave you that instruction. I also learned that God plans our steps in life, so don’t ever try to compare yourself to the next person and wonder why you are not there yet, there is a time and place for everything. When God blesses someone close to you remember he is in the neighborhood.
Everyone reading this if you don’t take nothing else from this remember this, don’t ever doubt yourself. Go after that vision that God places on your heart and don’t let up, it might seem crazy in the beginning but it will all make sense in the end. Last thing always remain humble and genuine, no matter what.
