Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaykwon Hosey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jaykwon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I think the story didn’t necessarily carve out my mission, but it helped it become more vivid in my sight. I’ve been a writer for 7 years almost, but experiencing tragedy in 2020 pushed me into my passion more than it ever has. In June I lost my girlfriend in an accident we both were involved in, and I went into a coma for 2 weeks before being in a wheelchair for 7 months. So I began writing, initially, about grief and my pain. This grew into expressing my own obsession with hip-hop through storytelling. Now I embrace that. The initial story is still present in what I’m doing now, and my vision, somewhere, but I never forget tragedy as the genesis for my current trajectory.
My vision is to write and study hip-hop, have honest conversations about where it is, what it does and where it fails. I want to tell real stories and humanize artists. And provide commentary in ways that let the art be consumed and interpreted by fans. While doing this, I’ll remain committed to great writing and responsible journalism, pumping restorative elements into the culture.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I write, create, and help dictate the direction of whatever vision an artist may have. Wherever words are needed I’m present, providing my services. I’m open to freelance work, album reviews, editing, etc. I provide creative direction for visuals, photoshoots and any other form of storytelling. I’m committed to my pen and craft, and always lead with my best foot. This sets me apart; no matter the platform, my best work is provided.
I’ve been writing for some time, I’ve been blogging since 2017. After what happened 2020, pain inspired me to continue seeing my story through, as if it were a book I started and didn’t finish. I’m proud of everything I write and of how far I’ve come in all this. God has blessed my hand.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Restore our culture and redeem the times. Handle my craft responsibly and insert my words and voice into the right conversations to help facilitate the direction we’re all going. I want to make sure the right stories are being told, honest and inclusive spaces are being created, and people are being seen. It can all be done through hip-hop and black art, my affinity for these things will make room for my passions to live freely. Rap commentary, and rap spaces. Everything will be restored.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
What it does for people, and how they can be impacted by your work outside of capitalism and consumerism. When they connect with your story, they’ll always be interested in what you’re building and support it. Also the independence and ability to create my own system and rules to play by, although integrity might be hard to fully commit to in anything funded through capitalism, I can fight to be as honest as possible until my craft falls into the hands of a system or the industry/engine. But I can in some ways control that still as I learn more.
