JayJay, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The best investment I ever made was Myself.
It took me 10 years to understand why this is crucial, but when I did, a major shift occurred in my mindset, vision and career.
For a long time I thought success would come from hard work and dedication, hours put down behind the instrument and sweat. I would acquire technique, experience and language, but my personality, vision and confidence wouldn’t grow as much. My development and career seemed stuck when my ambition was way bigger.
I slowly realized that becoming successful as a Musician would come from much more things.
I then started seeing myself as a Brand, a Company in which I needed to invest to make it grow and reach my goals. The idea of thinking short term stopped, expanding my perspective and trajectory to some further horizons.
I decided to do things that made me happy, travel and live in places that would inspire me, spend time and money into my mental health and curiosity. I Traded some practice hours and paid gigs for some inspiration time, going to exhibitions and live shows around the world, meeting incredibly talented people along the way.
Carving my craft became a priority, and my environment the foundation of my life. My artistic vision developed, gained precision and my confidence grew.
Investing in myself helped me believing in myself but also made me choose, stepping down from many positions and jobs that I had, ending certain relationships to focus on my trajectory.
Moving to Los Angeles was part of this investment on myself, today I am thrilled and proud to be where I am, Enjoying the process, working with insanely talented artists and learning so much along the way.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Starting my musical journey playing Jazz in a school in South of France as a drummer. My hometown hosts a major Jazz festival every year and I was lucky enough to be surrounded by incredible international musicians. My curiosity and and determination made me to move to the UK after graduating, I was hungry for new sounds and pop music.
I started touring and drumming for different artists, learning a lot along the way. Embracing my thirst of creativity, I became a Dj and Musical Director, putting shows together and crossing over genres in my sets.
I think that what I love the most about my journey and process, allowing myself to carve my art under different forms of expressions. I don’t want to be just a Pop Touring drummer, or a Club DJ. My personality as a musician has different facets but all under the same prism. That’s my brand.
I spend a lot of time traveling and seeking inspiration, between New York, Paris, Mexico city, London and LA. Each place has a sound and energy, and I am soaking it in all up.
I now use my vision to work with artists on live shows, albums and recordings. Relocated in Los Angeles last year, Im loving the collaborations and different projects I am being part of ! The People, talents and artists I share my life with are the essence of my happiness and play a major role in my musical Journey. I keep my curiosity and creativity sharpened up thanks to my new environment, LA is really an incredible to live in as a Musician.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Having the choice and feel free is surely the most rewarding aspect of my life as an artist. Choosing where to live, who to work with, when to get away and take some time off.
Being creative is an everyday hustle but also gives you options in life. Its endless, you can reinvent yourself as many times as you want, take different directions and repeat. Its freedom.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My mantra has always been to get out of my comfort zone. This gave me the strength to bounce back from any situation and not be afraid to move on when things go wrong.
I try not to stay in any situation or relationship that doesn’t suit me nor makes me happy. Im not afraid of change, go to the next chapter or turn the page if needed, and that’s because Ive always pushed myself into the unknown.
