We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful JayEss . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with JayEss below.
JayEss , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The “Wildflower” series
It was the end of 2019 when I started working on an instrumental I was planning to release for the upcoming year 2020 as a single. That single at the time was named “Wildflower”, now titled “Flower in the Wild” on the album.
I was coming fresh off from working on 2 of my great music friends projects I produced
“Sainto – Delusions of Grandeur” and
“Ascended Breath – Certainty”
Sainto had just moved back to Atlanta from LA and not too long after, we began working on “DoG” with the first song we worked on and recorded being “AyO”
At the end of 2019 after finishing the work with AB on “Certainty” and releasing the project in December, I wanted to kick off the new year with some new music following up from my previous album “Midnight”. I didn’t have any new material for the next chapter though with the music I wanted to create. I had an idea in mind of a specific type of sound I wanted to create I had been sitting with for a couple of months ever since my trip to the casino with my fiancé and friends but now I had the time to explore and finally create it!
When I made “Flower in the Wild” formerly known as wildflower I reached out to Kellie (thistleanddoe) who I worked with previously for my ep “Elemental”. She did the artwork for that ep and also created the artwork for “Wildflower vol. 1”. After seeing the artwork she did for wildflower I knew that this was more than a single but a body of work that I wanted to create. I was influenced by nature, vintage material, and the atmosphere. I wanted to implement those sources within the music on the album.
I always looked at this album as growth, both personally and artistically. This album was the album I was confident in the sound that I created production wise and also conceptually it felt like Me. After a little over a month I made 8 more instrumentals with the addition of “flower in the wild” and I felt like I was ready to release “Wildflower vol. 1”.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a music producer based in Atlanta, Ga. I also audio engineer from time to time. I just love working with sounds in general and find it fascinating how one idea can turn into a body of work that can resonate with lots of people. It’s amazing the effects music can have on people!
If you know me you know I’m always aiming to break another barrier for personal growth. I feel like there’s something to learn from with anything, even if you may not feel that way at the moment. I feel like moments in your life are seeds and they blossom over time to shape you into your current version.
What I would say I’m the most proud of would be doing something I love to do faithfully and understanding why I love doing it and having a fountain of ideas to continue creating!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Being a creative I feel like I’m more of an introvert. I feel like I have to keep a part of my mind open to let ideas come in and get out. I’m always drawing inspiration from something so I could be in a setting with lots of people around and nothing to do with music and something my click and I would either have to withdraw myself from the swing or try to hold onto that feeling I got.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
There’s no right way to get to where you think you should be. Stop following and swearing by what may have worked for someone else and believe in you. You will be happier finding your own unique journey
