We recently connected with Jaye Harmon and have shared our conversation below.
Jaye, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
In the music and entertainment industry, much of the corporate world caters to artist that have already experienced a major level of success. However, there are several talented artists who never achieve success due to lack of opportunity. The goal of JPE is to give talented artists and musicians the opportunity to develop. This is done by educating and equipping them with the knowledge needed to be successful in the industry, and producing a quality product that will be viable in the market place.
Jaye, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a musician practically all my life. Growing up in a Pentecostal church, music was always present, both at church and in the home. I started out as a drummer, and evolved to playing piano and organ in my early adulthood. I was introduced to radio my first year of college at the University Of Maryland Eastern Shore. I was not particularly interested in radio. However I was very interested in music and studio. The studio of the radio station closely resembled a music recording studio to me. I started out doing minor production work, which soon evolved into my mentor in radio at that time, Lisa McCready putting me on the air after she heard my voice. They rest as they say, is history. I was mentored by some of the greatest names in the radio industry, to include the late KJ Holiday, Paul Butler, Donnie Simpson, and Matt Anderson. My company, Jayez Pad Entertainment, (JPE) is both a music and media production company. It provides radio and television commercial production services for companies, as well as voice overs for various purposes. JPE also provides music production services for artist, as well as marketing, promotions, and A&R. What set JPE apart from the industry is the fact that we are not driven by a client’s budget. We are motivated by their motivation to succeed and get the job done. Our philosophy is, budgets can always be worked out.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
With technology constantly evolving, digital audio recording will always be an ongoing learning process. Where as many DAW’s,(digital audio workstations) function in the same manner, they all have their own unique features. Most producers stick with the DAW of their choice throughout their entire career. While I too, adhere to this philosophy, I remain open to constantly learning new methods of recording, processing, and mixing audio in an attempt to stay current with all of the evolving technology changes.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe that my sound is my brand. Both in media and music production. When my voice is heard, it is recognizable, both to those who know me personally and those who may not. I strive for my sound to be captivating and hold the attention of the listener until the desired conclusion or point has been made.
