We were lucky to catch up with Jaydelise Volquez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jaydelise, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
There are times when I do wish I had started my career as a child. That thought is quickly thrown away when I think of how little my family and I knew about the industry back then. Though I wanted to become an actress since I was six years old, I started trying to develop my career at sixteen with zero knowledge on what I needed to do or how to do it. I did everything i shouldn’t have done; scam schools, scam agencies, terrible headshots, sending my unsolicited information to magazines- embarrassing. It took time and maturity for me to learn the ins and outs and the business side of the industry. Seeing where I am now and how things happened, I think I started at the perfect time.
Jaydelise, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jaydelise Volquez and I am an actress. I have worked mostly in movies though I recently booked a starring role in a series. I have worked in various genres which I am very thankful for. It is very humbling to realize you are doing what you love every day, so I work very hard on every role I take on regardless of budget size or the name of the actor I am sharing scenes with. It is very easy to be distracted by the glitz and glam side of this work so I am very proud of my discipline and how seriously I take my craft. There is always room for improvement so I am constantly learning and pushing myself. I recently finished filming the pilot episode of a comedy where I play a character very unlike myself which was a blast to do. I also have some projects in the works I will be very excited to talk about in the future!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
There is no better feeling than waking up and doing what you love. It seems like a crazy notion actually wanting to go to work but I am truly blessed to say that work is a highlight in my day. I get to be creative and live different lives, it’s honestly the best!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Most creatives face a lot of negativity especially when starting out. You constantly hear everything from “you’ll never make it” to “it’s not going to happen” you’re too this or too that. It is hard to not listen. I am no exception in that area but it is important to see the picture even if others don’t. I have learned this through and through.
