We were lucky to catch up with Jayd Hernandez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jayd, appreciate you joining us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
I’ve noticed a lot of entrepreneurs are entitled. It’s the only group of people who expect investing in one training or program should and will automatically guarantee success, clients and profit.
A doctor or lawyer, for example, will spend years and money to build their life long career and yet, a lot of entrepreneurs expect to be an overnight success without the time and effort put in.
Jayd, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, I’m Jayd Hernandez, a Camouflage Tattoo Artist specializing in concealing stretch marks, scars and hair loss with permanent ink.
I like to think of myself as a modern day magician, giving the illusion of blended skin and fuller hair in a way that looks natural and not like a tattoo.
My business is located in Gilbert, Arizona and is called Studio Conceal. Aside from services, we also host monthly trainings to teach other people how to start a fulfilling career in camouflage tattooing.
We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
Yes, before I started camouflage tattooing, I owned an organic airbrush tanning studio in Phoenix, Arizona. I had the business for three years when I decided to explore other avenues in the beauty industry. I knew I wanted to sell my business instead of closing it because it was still growing and had a ton of market potential. I began researching how to “sell” and in short, became “obsessed” with selling it.
Here’s how I did it: Most casual conversations often start by someone asking, “what’s new” or “what have you been up to?” And I took that simple question as an opportunity to tell EVERYONE that I was planning and looking to sell my business. I just knew that eventually telling everyone my goal would lead me closer to the sale. I also got very clear by writing out and envisioning who my ideal buyer was, which was someone who’d be passionate about the business, take care of its reputation (we had over 100 5-star reviews online in 3 years), and take it further than I ever could.
Long story short, I ended up having a friend who I hadn’t seen in years stop by the tanning studio to say hi and buy a shirt. Naturally, we caught up and I casually mentioned my goal of selling without any inclination that she would be interested and the very next day, she called me to tell me she couldn’t stop thinking about buying it!
We had many more conversations after that and eventually a contract was set in place with a few months of training to transition the business to her. This served to be an incredible way to introduce her to my clients so that she could retain them after I left. In addition, she immediately implemented other services and enhancements to cater to my clients in a way that truly took the business model farther than I did.
I’m really proud to say she and I still keep in contact and the business is live and running with over 300 5-star reviews. It’s actually really neat to see how it’s evolved and to this day, I still think she offers the best airbrush tans.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Old fashioned manners and respect. Being in integrity is one of my highest values so calling clients back, always being prompt and on time, over communicating, making eye contact, listening and not interrupting them, and last, being fully present to them in session has really been the heart of how we serve our clients and students.
Just this year, I’ve made a rule to not even have my phone in the treatment room as another layer of protection. I don’t want the sound or mishap of the vibration to distract me from being present to my client.
It’s simple, I know but you’d be surprise how distracted people are from each other and the small details do add up to be the big ones.
