We recently connected with Jayce Hall and have shared our conversation below.
Jayce, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
Currently, I run all of my social platforms. I learned pretty early what a phenomenal tool social media can be to an artist. There are only so many family members and friends that will choose to support your art, and it is a big world out there. It was never really my intention to get on social media with my art, I just had different little pushes from friends that I should put my work out there and not to let it live in my notebook. I started posting on TikTok in January of 2020; by March I had 1,000 followers, and by August I had over 100,000, and currently, in February of 2023, I have over 750,000. I am a firm believer there is an audience for everything, and you just have to put yourself out there for people to find.
At first, my videos were really grungy. They lacked smoothness, consistency, and professionalism, but slowly and surely, I learned what makes for successful content. I learned to love creating videos/content almost as much as I enjoy creating the artwork. My advice would be to learn to enjoy at least one aspect of the things that you don’t like in your business, and that enjoyment will eventually spread.
I would not be where I am today if I didn’t put my work out there, and further than that, I have to SHOW people my art. It is harder than most people think to be randomly found. If you put in a little effort, you can reach an exponentially larger audience than if you just coast and don’t put yourself out there.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Jayce Hall and I am an artist. I specialize in a specific art form called Micrography, where my artwork is created by using words, names, and phrases. I first heard about this art style in 2019/early 2020 and was fascinated.
I had only been drawing for a couple of years, but it was instilled into me to continue to experiment and try other styles. I attended North Dakota State University in my hometown for 1 year trying to find a major I thought would interest me when I took the class “Foundations Of Drawing.” I was the only non-Art Major in the class and it definitely showed. The professor and my fellow students were always very kind and helpful to me when I had questions. The main lessons from that semester class was to not be afraid to evolve in my art, and “If you draw for 15 minutes a day, you will get good eventually” or something along those lines but nicer haha!
When I first started to gain confidence in my artwork, I was working with charcoal. I was creating my drawings by filling in the entire sheet of paper black, and then erasing to reveal whatever image I was drawing. The next medium I fell in love with was expressive line drawings. I loved how free feeling they were and I loved the texture you could get in the drawings. However, I missed being able to go in and get detail, so I then turned to pointillism. I loved the texture and the detail you could get, but I hated that a drawing took 100+ hours of work. After that, I was constantly trying new styles until I heard about Micrography.
All of the artists that I saw doing it at the time were really cool and fantastic, but I wondered how I could push the style forward. The drawings that I saw being made, though impressive, were missing an element. Realism. How do you make a drawing realistic when it is made out of words? That became my goal, and for the last 3 years I have been trying to achieve that.
This journey that I’ve been on has led to so many amazing opportunities. I have been featured on ESPN, Buzzfeed, and a handful of News Stations, and I have done work for companies like The NHL, Call of Duty, Coinbase, The Brooklyn Nets, Bell Bank, Art Of Sport, Warner Bro’s, and numerous others. I am extremely grateful for all of the love and support my art has been given the past few years! It means the world, and I want to say thank you for reading!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal as an artist is to encourage people to rethink what is possible. The art I do, at the risk of sounding braggadocios, pushes the envelope of what people think can be done. I want to encourage people to fall in love with their own creative process, and continue to push themselves to create something amazing.
My other goal as an artist is to be as accessible as possible. I very much dislike how exclusive the art world is. I understand a lot of it is a business, but I also understand what it is like being a 22 year old with $27 in his bank account that wants to support art in the world, but doesn’t have the resources to drop $190 on a limited edition print. Personally, I am all about balance. I want to have options for everybody. Everybody deserves to have art in their homes.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My advice is largely very easy. Start simple and expect nothing.
I started off just posting final photos of my art until I had a big but really simple realization. People LOVE seeing art get made. 80% of people out there have no idea how to even get started with a drawing. If you can show people a bit of your creative process and let them see how you start and what the process looks like, they will be 1000% more interested in seeing the final product.
The easiest advice to success in social media is to love what you are making. Be proud of your art and make videos that you are proud of. That way, if likes/follows/interactions don’t come, at least you are proud of what you are making. Authenticity is really easy to see in people online, and people can spot a fake a mile away. Just be you, be proud of what you are making, and make cool stuff, and you will be set!
