Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jay Weitzner. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
Being in the medical/health/wellness/fitness industry subjects one to countless methods and ideas about how things should be done. When you’re young, inexperienced, and susceptible to information that sounds good, but isn’t, this can be dangerous. I fell into that trap over and over. I thought the information had to be good because it came from a really well-known figure, or because it simply “sounded right”. The defining moments in my career came when I began to learn about physics as it related to exercise and when I met who I consider my mentor, Greg Mack. Both events led me down a path of analysis and objectivity providing me with tools to think rather than just follow a ready-made plan.
I learned about physics and exercise through an organization called, RTS (Resistance Training Specialist). I learned how to help people who suffer from pain and mobility issues through The Muscle System Specialist program via Greg Mack.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Certified Muscle System Specialist and a Certified Medical Exercise Specialist. I opened Symmetry Exercise Clinic in Naples, Florida in 2013. Although I began my career in 1999 as a personal trainer, today I spend the majority of my workdays as a Certified Muscle System Specialist (CMSS) helping clients with musculoskeletal and movement issues. I hold a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in Exercise Science/Human Performance with an emphasis on exercise physiology.
I originally entered the field because, at an early age, I recognized the value of physical health and knew so many people could benefit from exercise. I later focused on working with people with pain and mobility issues as I became aware of all the ailments and issues a high-quality muscle system could improve, many of which I historically thought could only be helped by traditional medicine (injections/pain med/ etc) or therapy.
The thought process behind the Certified Muscle System Specialist is wholly unique. I’m always excited to explain and discuss the minutia but in summary – we have an approach that addresses not parts or locations of a body, but rather how the quality of control of the entire neuromuscular system governs movement and how that movement is related to pain. By improving the quality of control of your movement we can improve how you feel.
Most of our clients find us after physical therapy or pain management has failed. Some find us when they want to avoid surgery or after they still don’t feel like they want after they had it. It’s a powerful process that looks at people in a way they haven’t been looked at before.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Empathy. No question about it. You have to be able to relate to people even if you have not experienced the same thing. Take exercising for example. It has always been easy for me to be consistent with exercise. If I don’t have the ability to truly put myself in someone’s position who has difficulty exercising my ability to help them will be limited.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
This is likely an underwhelming answer, Caring and doing a good job is the most effective strategy, Do a good job and people talk about you. Genuinely caring goes a long way. I’ve been in this industry since 1999. I never feel burnt out. Caring helps keep you motivated. Caring also helps people trust you. No one is going to help everyone. Even if you can’t help someone, and you care, and you’re honest and you refer them out, caring will still help people refer to you.
