Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jay Svn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jay , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The mission of my clothing brand is to not only bring back a feeling of nostalgia visually but to also bring back a feeling of a black-owned clothing brand being at the forefront and being a household name like Fubu and Phat Farm used to be. It’s meaningful to me because I want young black kids to want to strive to be more than just a rapper or an athlete, I want them to see what avenues are available for them to conquer outside of music or playing a sport.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Jeff “Jay Svn” Johnson. I’m an aspiring entrepreneur/music artist from Baltimore, Maryland. I got into clothing in 2019, the year Nipsey Hussle was murdered. His press run during the release of his debut album inspired me to strive for independence. COVID taught me that corporate America doesn’t care about you and I refuse to live under someone else rule for the rest of my life. There’s way too much life to live and too much money to make to be getting scraps bussing ass at a 9-5 all year. The hard truth is things won’t change if I don’t make the changes happen so I do what needs to be done to make success a reality for me, my family and my friends
My brand is Blak Kami, and my clothing line is tailored around anime and African American culture. We sell all types of clothing but as of right now we have shirts, hats, crop tops and hoodies gearing up to branch into different types of product once we have a steady following. My discipline comes from knowing about consistency, I understand the basic fundamentals of business and being consistent is at the top of the list. It keeps me on my toes and keeps me thinking ahead for future collections and marketing strategies.
What sets us apart from others is authenticity. Nowadays the market is oversaturated with the same product just with a different name attached to it. We strive to bring something original that you won’t see anywhere else. Though we’re still up and coming are interactions with the people have shown us that we’re on the right track and all we have to do is stick the assignment and we’ll prosper.
I’m most proud of being able to say I have a business, though I know there’s ALOT I still have to learn being able to say “I have a business” means the world to me because not everybody can say it and not everybody can stick through the trials and tribulations that come with it. What I want people to know about my business is everything comes from the heart, all designs are original and is intended to catch the eye of any anime or fan of the culture. We stand firm on great customer service and try everything in our power to keep that business motto intacted with every design we present to our fan base.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I decided to pivot my life once my wife was pregnant with my daughter daughter. I realized in that moment that having 2 kids I had to do something to pass down to my kids. As the king of the house I need to lead by example so my kids can have the blueprint. The harsh reality I had to come to pivoting is that I needed to make the change because it won’t happen otherwise so that’s exactly what I did. I hope the transition I made will create a legacy that can outlive me and grow with the generations of my family after I pass.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met 1 of my co-founders through school and the other through a friend of my wife. I saw that we all had a talent that could bring in some revenue so I came up with Blak Kami to put our talents on display. My brother Leroy is my designer. He’s an up-and-coming artist with a lot of talent and my other brother Jabari is my media guy who does all our videos and photos. I hope that this platform allows all of our talents to shine and grow into something beautiful and long-lasting
